That hip hop thread...

A lovely underground hip-hop record from 2020. Based on my minimal research, it appears the producer was part of a microscene based around the unofficial Wu-Tang forums along with dedicated forums for discontinued samplers. (sp-forums, mpc-forums)

Regardless, this production style sounds like what I initially expected the whole 'Lo-fi Hip-hop to study to' style would sound like (though there is definite Nujabes influence amongst all the Wu-Tang)

A brief aside, but I wonder if this sort of lo-fi boom bap has/will be co-opted by crap Vinnie Paz impersonators. If I'm able to hear this tape, that the scene is probably well documented elsewhere.

With all these happenings in the current week to almost two weeks (Moscow terrorist attack, Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsing, Diddy getting his houses in Miami and California raided, etc.) at least I can rest well knowing that…. Kendrick Lamar does not like the idea of being grouped in with J. Cole and Drake too much.

He’s been trending on social media for the latter part of a week for daring to say that Drake and Cole are not on his level, while in the same breath doing it on a Future album where he (I dare say) was overshadowed by Metro Boomin’s production.

Here’s the lyrics for people that don’t want to listen to the song:

And yes, Metro announced that WE DON’T TRUST YOU with Future will have a second part to it, as it’s being released later in the year. It’s on verge to selling 235k this week.

This wasn't even the first his verse dissing other rappers
around 3:00 for his verse

Does anybody know why this song exists? There is no cursing and the lyrics are quite positive (arguing against Marijuana use), while this is not necessary a bad or good thing for a song it's just so different than the rest of NWAs work, hell it's different than the rest of the Straight Outta Compton album. I mean Dre himself would go onto have an album called The Chronic, so does anybody know what they were going for here with the uplifting anti-drug messaging despite the rest of their songs?

They needed at least one song that could get some mainstream airplay. Probably just to show that they could do a song that wasn't hardcore ultra-gangsta.

Two hip-hop producers who are considered legends for their respective coasts to gain big success in hip-hop — East Coast and Southern hip-hop — have unfortunately died this week with no cause of death being announced at this time.

For those that don’t know, Rico Wade was a part of the famous collective known as the Dungeon Family, which was responsible for helping bring national and international success with producing tracks for the likes of OutKast, Goodie Mob and TLC. He also is the cousin of the already popular and influential rap star, Future.

As for Mister Cee, he helped pave the way of success for The Notorious B.I.G by helping him out with his mixtape before producing cuts for his celebrated classic, Ready To Die. He also was the DJ and hype man for influential classic hip hop star, Big Daddy Kane.

Either way, for classic hip-hop fans, these are big losses for the hip-hop community. Condolences and prayers to their families during this time.

I love this stuff personally, I grew up in the majority white suburbs outside of LA in the early 90s, one of the first major events I vividly remember is the riots (though I only had to watch them from the safety of my TV like the rest of America) and while admittedly my life was a lot different and safer than those in South Central seeing these old rap music videos will always take me back to being a kid at that time, I don't know if it's the sound or just seeing all the old cars in the video or hearing Ren shout: "nineteen ninety motherfucking one!" And while yes there are definitly modern rappers I love to me theres nothing like late 80s/early 90s West Coast Rap.

Congratulations to A Tribe Called Quest for making history being the sixth classic hip-hop group to be inducted in this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They were nominated twice over the years, but they managed to get in for the third time this year.

It should also be pointed out that the duo Eric B. and Rakim were nominated for the second time over the years of the Rock Hall’s existence, though unfortunately, they did not make the cut.

You can check out the full list of who made it this year here:

Fuck, the, frail shit, uh, cuz when my coke come in
They gotta use the scale that they weigh the whales wit
Carlssons on the Jeep, Bugatti made the prototype
Hoped you'd get the picture but you just can't photo life

Determined niggas make it
Kickin' down the door and we burnin' niggas naked
The house costs a million, sittin' on the beach
And the only thing I know: if it's furnished I'ma take it

My bathtub lif' up, my walls do a three-sixty
We got the shit that the goverment got
Talkin' money then you rubbin' the spot
Real niggas say that they be wi'lin'
We on the Cayman Islands
On a yacht with our favorite albums

A bad ho and a plate of salmon, smokin' and drinkin'
Nigga is you thinkin' that our fate is violent
I love my nigga for the fact that he real
And nobody on the faculty squeal

What, and if you facin' capital pun
Pass me a gun
And I'ma give you time to run while I rapidly peel

We, gon', make it,
We gon' make it, we gon' make it
We, gon', make it
We gon' make it, we gon' make it
We, gon', make it

I learned the Game quickly
And I'on't like to rent, so when I fly now I bring my cars on the plane wit' me
In this case who's the loser
Ran through enough coke for Castro to build schools in Cuba
Teach ya kids how to read and write and use the Ruger

Mothafuckin' niggas is back, Jada and P
We got water, X haze, plus weight'a'da D
And I'm tired'a hearin' about ol' niggas that had it
And be the same ol' niggas that ratted
Who cares!?
Talk about how we hawk niggas in they fuckin' back
Gunwork's official but niggas don't be wantin' that
Why?
Cuz they puss and they mans is lame
We Soul for Real in the hood we make Candy Rain
I can easily send you to God
But come and see me at the Plaza Hotel I might give you a job
If you can't remember the name
All you gotta do is ask the dame for the niggas that deliver it hard

We, gon', make it,
We gon' make it, we gon' make it
We, gon', make it
We gon' make it, we gon' make it

Ja, da, mwah, I'll kiss you you bitch ass nigga
Bet the hood won't miss you you bitch ass nigga
Might find your man dead in the ocean
He be a'ight though
You know dead rappers get better promotion
Why we don't laugh at death and cry at birth
Never say you can't do it til you try it first
Be the young niggas eager to pull it
But it's a message in everything, trust me, even a bullet
Go to war with the 8 and a pound
Think you got ya ear to the street now, put ya face in the ground
Cuz my shells is expensive
You'll know exactly why when you yellin' in intensive
My fellas is offensive
Lucky cuz I got guns that crack ya back
But that's not what I prefer I manafacture crack
And, niggas turn bitch when you show 'em the steel
But we know how to bid so y'all go head and squeal
I'm comfortable far from home
Eatin' right gettin' good rest either on the bar or the phone
I'm the reason niggas got deals the past few years
Sound anything like Kiss? Then sign right here
And, y'all just talkin', I'm doin' it well
Jadakiss motherfucka, I'ma see you in Hell!

We, gon', make it,
We gon' make it, we gon' make it
We, gon', make it
We gon' make it, we gon' make it
We, gon', make it
