The deep history of Hungary has been rife with war, whenever civil war, nation on nation war, or a happy mix of both.
It is a country extremely beholden to its past, even perhaps because there is one thing it clearly has not, and that's any chance of future relevance.
The troubles began with the Soviets, I mean the Allies, I mean the Entente, I mean the Austrians, I mean the Türks, I mean the Mongols.... well, lets focus on the present.
The trouble began with the fall of the Soviet Union, and the predatory privatisation that left the country with no industry to speak of.
This has caused a lot of different goverments to try and make Hungary's first True and Honest Real Democracy to work, which kind of didn't work. The military, industrial and healthcare capabilites of the country had been rapidly shrinking under every single government.
The long strokes of the Goverment are as follows:
1990-94: First was the Antal goverment, a general centrist party that did the best they could but didn't last long, as the poor guy died in office.
1994-98: Second was the Horn government, made from MSZP (The re-named old Communist Party) by Horn. This was noted for downsizing the army and further sellouts to the west as well as the fabled Bokros package of auserity measures. The Army began to go downhill.
1998-2002: The first Orbán run, and the only competent out of the bunch. This is where a lot of Orbán loyalty comes from, it is to note that this was a relatively uncorrupt and middle-right Orbán iteration. Early Access Orbán.
2002-04: Medgyessy and the return of the MSZP, as Orbán was so sure that his good works would make people rationally vote for him that he did not campaign. Nothing really horrendous, but it was the start of the downwards spiral. This guy stepped down because he was a Russian Spy.
2004-06-09: Gyurcsány. The MSZP darling that ruined the opposition, almost bankrupted the country, and generally made everything shit. Reason Number 1 of Orbán's return, a clown to surprass even Medgyessy. Wanted to creature an US style healthcare system that is fully private. Failed, but private healthcare does exist, but beside the public "cheap" one.
2009-10: Bajnai, another MSZP replacement for the rest of term of the disgraced Gyurcsány after he stepped down.
2010-CURRENT YEAR: Orbán's second run as the government. Started out well but became increasingly more corrupt. Known for being based but never quite going all the way, and subsisting on EU gibsmedat. Made at least some minor improvements to the army after Trump poked him, but the healthcare is still in the gutter.
Orbán has been taking a few Ls lately, mostly under the pressure of Biden,EU, and oligarch scandals.
The current political landspace is a bit in flux.
The main hero of our tale is Orbán, the almost based but not quite friend of Trump and Bibi, reigning heavy weight champion of corruption and triggering libs. His numbers are constantly between 45-55% of the population.
The contestents are the ever persistent Gyurcsány, who ditched and gutted MSZP for his Democratic Coalition (DK) and rules the left wing with an iron grip, having had a solid support of 30% of the population.
Upstarts are Magyar*, a new soft center-right challenger who goes by an anti-corruption unity platforms and Current Year (TM), and Mi Hazánk, Our homeland, a somewhat far right party that rose from the ashes of the disgraced and now irrelavant Jobbik (Righter) party that threw its turncoat lot in with Gyurcsány last time, alienating all the 5-10% of hardcore nationalists that liked them and are now voting for Mi Hazánk.
* He doesn't have any concrete numbers yet, but he appears to draw from moderates of both sides. Polling puts Orbán at 45%, him at 25%, with all opposition parties loosing a good chunk to Magyar. He has really cut the sails from all opposition parties as well, the recent EU elections will tell just by how much.
Now why is this lolcow worthy? Because of the voters. The average Hungarian is torn between many equally retarded options. First he wants to be known as the intellectual European, not at all steppe mongol. Second he wants to be known as a literate and intelligent gentleman, far above the common half-white slavs around him. Always looking at the US and Europe, but never getting that he is not like them.
Nationalism is kept in check by Orbán's guzzling of Bibi's kosher kummies like Trump or Biden, and because it is "low brow" to the fart sniffing masses of normies who think America is stuck in the 50s. Of course, many still vote for Orbán, as he keeps the darkies out. Gypsies run rampant as neither Orbán has the balls to round them up into fun prisons, nor would the EU-cucks let him, holding him by the gibsmuh leash.
Liberalism is kept in check by the looming spectre of Gyurcsány and his abysmal handling of well, everything. Budapest, the capital has been a recent victory, where the far left mayor Karácsony stopped paying for cleaning up the city, and proudly declared the growing weeds as "bee pastures" . The growing number of hobos would be the "fly pastures", right?
It is also worthy of note that the opposition has no set of values or plan, besides "Opposite of what Orbán does." This has manifested acutely during the Covid crises, where they changed their tune on a dime.
Orbán doesn't buy enough ventillators? Bad, buy more. Orbán buys ventillators? Bad he wasted money! Orbán wants no lockdowns? He is a science hater! Orbán does lockdowns? He is literally Trump, I mean Hitler, I mean Putin, I mean Voldemort, and so on. Why isn't Orbán making a mask mandate? We need it! He did a mask mandate? Who is he to tell us when to wear a mask?
This skizoid imbecility costed them the last election, where all the opposition parties save Mi hazánk went together, and campaigned on fighting Russia. Because our mighty 41 and a half thousand strong army could totally last a day against the Russians! At least 20% of soldiers are women.
I wonder, is Hungary even fit for Democracy? This mode of governance may not fit the highly divided and authority respecting public, who wants a Big Daddy to tell them what to do, just can't agree what daddy it has to be.
