I think most 40k fans end up staying at the end of the day GW may go woke but 40k is still the only place where reactionaries thrive.

I still find it funny that people claim that under Catalyst leadership the game has never been more popular, when in reality it was a combination of the fans on Youtube promoting the game and the other half is HBS Battletech and MW5 reaching the normies.

Catalyst had nothing to do with its popularity.
Case in point, 90% of the videos, articles and conversations about BattleTech are pre-Jihad. (ETA: fuck, even the videogames aren't touching anything Catalyst wrote, it's all set in the time period originally written by FASA.)

Nobody cares about Catalyst's input, beyond meme shit like the PopeMech.

Razorfist gave a pretty good synopsis of what happened for tourists & retards like me and Sidescrollers. Never played Battletech but the 90’s comics for it were pretty good. Mechs with shoulder-launchers were an easy sell.

Much as Razor is a sperg, it's because he's a sperg that I find him so entertaining. Been meaning to watch this for a while, better late than never. Side note, anyone use MegaMek/MekHQ?

BattleTech allows for maximum table-checking and dice-rolling autism with all the funny critical hit goodness everybody loves. Alpha Strike tones that down a lot for the sake of a faster, more deadly game.
I honestly wish MW5 would get more of that funny critical hit goodness, especially lol random TAC hits, but the only mod working on that (MercTech) is autistic even by BattleTech standards. Yet Another MechLab has already done most of the MechLab stuff he's done but better (only unique things he's got there are FrankenMech construction and a different upgrade system), and switching over to a submod for that that expands on the combat mechanics would save him a ton of time. Instead he's several DLC updates behind as a result of needing to rewrite his entire codebase from scratch after PGI added melee weapons and superchargers/MASC, and in terms of feature completeness and stability is behind where he was when DLC1 hit.

The thing about Battletech that I've noticed over the years is, ask any random Battletech fan about their favorite mech or lore thing, and I'd bet you solid money that whatever they name, happened under FASA. All the shit that's been shoveled out the door by Topps and Catalyst, nobody gives a fuck about it. Battletech peaked at Tukayyid. Everything since has been increasingly lame or retarded, while many of the iconic mechs that grabbed people have been melted down into samey-looking blocky messes by the redesigns done for MWO and other more recent games. The setting is dead, coasting on the previous successes through nothing but inertia while the morons who hold the license just keep milking it for all they can while adding no new value.

I'll go to bat for PGI, I think their designs while not for everyone are very good and the art has always been one of PGI's strengths to the point where PGI designs are sometimes better than CGL's redesigns.

I'm that guy. The lore and mechs post-3067 is so dogshit that I stay in the Clan-era. Everything past that, the Jihad, Dark Age, and all the other new stuff is so bad that I stay with the original stuff.

I like a lot of the dark age mechs like amarok, hammerhead and rokurokubi, but the story is just awful.

They are, but both of them suffer from the same issue of having very ossified design bibles. So all the 'Mechs look like they were made by the same manufacturer. I want the 'Mech equivalent of the Bugatti front grill or the Camaro stripes, something you can look at and go "yep, this was made by Defiance". Sure, going Full Steel Samurai like the Dracs did is going a bit over the top, but most 'Mechs since PGI took over are either lacking in personality, or coasting on personality earned by the more exaggerated original designs they're revising for the ilKhan Rec Guides.

I've done a few solo campaigns using it. It's okay. Just very janky and you have to set some hard rules for yourself.
Yeah it's hard to get the hang of, but it's useful.
My main issue is that there are still a boat load of bugs and the weapon system completely fucking sucks.
Agreed, but I rather play that than MWO, MW5 with plenty of mods is decent but people tend to abandon them after a while as the game continues forward. I think this is the last DLC as they focus on the Clans game so maybe modders will catch up. Shame fucking Piranha Games will be holding the IP for years to come because it's clear they never had any idea what made MW so good. Rip FASA, Dynamix, and Zipper. The Battletech game is still pretty good (remember to get the pronouns obliterator mod), shame the engine version has a memory leak and trying to run shit like Roguetech, BTA, BEX, etc. is awful on my PC. Not to mention the devs of all those mods are some of the most faggoty ass people around. "ate fun, 'ate banter, 'ate differing opinion, 'ate you."
Everything past that, the Jihad, Dark Age,
That shit was liquid ass. I do like some of the Mechs such as Celestial series, but everything surrounding these two eras, especially in the story department, is just...awful. Also, remember this thing?

I still find it baffling that the period of time where everyone is arming their industrialmechs is almost 200 years after the Succession Wars. You'd think with the violence and technological regression of the SuccWars thats when they'd be slapping guns on everything to send to the front and not an era where mixed tech mechs are becoming common.

Between IndustrialMechs not even existing when the Succession Wars lore was originally written, and Wizkids giving less than half a flying fuck for the lore of the property they had just licensed for their MechClix game... yeah, none of it makes sense and now we're stuck with this idiocy.

Damn shame none of the later owners just went "You know what? We're pretending NONE OF THIS EVER HAPPENED!" No Dark Age, no Wobblie Jihad, and we get the 3080's IS vs. Clan matchup we deserve, with the Homeworld Clans coming back to cleanse the entire Inner Sphere, Successor States, Periphery, and Spheroid Clans and all, of its tainted ways in a much better rendition of the Jihad than "Lol Word of Blake nukes everything out of nowhere".

It would also be a much better way to resurrect CSJ for like the two people who were fans by having them serve as the Word of Kerensky's shock trooper element in a Clan take on the Manei Domini. Yeah, your implants are going to burn you out in like ten years but you'll be fortunate to last two once the shooting starts and lucky to last five. The Clan mindset of disposable, eugenically iterative soldiers taken to the logical, Crusader extreme.

I really don't get why nobody's dropped the nu-lore. Nobody would care. People would in fact love going Disco Demolition Night on wizlore.

Furthermore I've not (since the 90s) truly understood how the Clans were seeing themselves as the saviors of true humanity but then degenerated instantly into weird ritual clone troopers. Unless it's supposed to be deeply ironic then it's pretty good, actually.
