Jack Rackham made a video on Stalin.

Notably around 9:15 he makes a comment about how real communism has never been tried.
Was it as a joke or was he serious? This guy always was weird with his stances and I'm glad I'm not subscribed to him anymore, ngl

NVM it was a poke at them, good on him

People need to stop acting as though Trotsky was a "real communist who believed in elections and not killing lots of people".
One of the few good realizations Stalin had was that Trotsky was a fucking detriment to the Soviet State and would have dragged them into a war they weren't prepared for. If Trotsky was in Stalins place in 1922 the Soviet Union would have been at war with Europe, and ironically Hitler may have been on the Allies side instead, Which is a wild fucking timeline to think about.

Ironically Trotsky would've been worse for Russia and Communism, especially with his foreign policy of "Permanent Revolution".

Don't know if this should be here but Cody's videos are always fun so here you go.
Furher Kolchak?

"The USSR under Stalin was the world's largest company town. It was a monopoly.
That's just regular socilaism.

Is it just me or is Cody getting lazier with his editing? There is more empty air and the structure seems worse.
He uploaded a version of this video and almost immediately privated it because of “sound quality issues”. He claims this version is better as it needed more time in the oven (but it still feels half-assed).

Cody is a dad now and he has more fun with his “Pointless Hub” channel where he makes videos about movies and video games. Alt. History was how he got his start but with YouTube demonetization and political landmines, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cody moves away from history.

His brother, Tyler, is better and makes more movie/video game stuff, so if Cody acts more like him and collaborates, that would be a win-win for me.

unsolicited rant about Metatron: He's really getting annoying and lolcow-ish about constantly saying "THE LEFT/RIGHT CANT UNDERSTAND HISTORY WELL" or "ACADEMICS WONT TELL YOU ABOUT THIS!!!" with his martyr-like persona he's taken upon. The best examples I can think of is his "Gilgamesh is gay/Alexander the Great was gay" but demonstrates little-to-no nuance understanding of the original langauge. I saw someone on xitter call him out about Gilgamesh and he said he had a full team translating (?) the original cuneiform tablet and how that person on xitter is stupid because they can't. from my experience, there's little-to-no cuneiform experts just willing to translate without anysort of HIGH payment. he also claims the same for Greek, Latin, ect. I'm paraphrasing but that level of "im better than you" whilst holding a BA degree is cringe and gay. I'm definitely someone who loves ripping on academia (see my PI post) and understands that people don't have the nuances of ancient texts. but, he's putting his own modern lens onto it while calling out other people (lmao). idk i liked him but i unsubscribed. also, his constant use of stockfootage is very jim sterling-esque.

PL to establish my own credibility: I'm working on getting my Ph.D. in History so while I am not an expert at everything, it is clear when someone is talking out of their ass. I work on dead languages/cultures/antiquity in particular. So, I am quite privy to translation bias. Also academia is gay lmao

His Sovietology video has been brought up before in this thread, but I wanted to make a post about Rosencreutz (https://www.youtube.com/@Rosencreutzzz). The previous post didn't give much detail about the channel, but from what I can tell he's the typical young (probably early 20's) leftist (probably wannabe/in-training) academic. In his video titled "How to Fake a Grassroots Movement (and why DC can't vote) he spends a lot of time talking about Initiative 77 and the 'save our tips astroturfing' campaign. He says in the video that he worked in the service industry and given the niche politics of the video I would find it very easy to believe that he at one point live in DC or lived and worked very near to it. Kind of an interesting video about a topic that I don't really care about. Of course it has the obligatory whinging about how DC has little control over itself (oh no, the evil Southern Republican got rid of the hecking needle return program in a majority black city though budgetary oversight!). Something also very funny is how at the end of the video he complains that the supposedly progressive, mostly black, city council are basically establishment puppets (duh), then in the comments some black guy derides him and says basically only other black people can call a black person an Uncle Tom. Rosencreutz then of course gives the industry standard thanks for the reminder.

He's also made a video on VFS and how retarded the UK's immigration system can be towards a White wealthy Westerner. Based on this video and the anecdotal experience he gives, I'm assuming that he's a foreign student in the UK, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was for graduate school. I quite like this video actually.

Generally, his topics seem to be less about history itself and more on historiography. Complaints have been made about the lack of general understanding of historiography in this thread and its something we definitely inadvertently end up talking about a lot here, but it doesn't often seem to be something we talk a lot about directly.

A lot of his videos are about video games, specifically Paradox titles, and the Civ series. One of my main problems with his videos is that often times the whole historiographical thesis of his video really often times has little to do with the game itself and most of the runtime is spent on talking about academic theories and context/background. For example, his video "Civilisation 6 and The Fate of Empires" spends most of the video talking about John Glubb and the 250 year limit for empires meme, which is really what the video is about. Really as far as the game goes, it's mostly just a complaint about the golden age/dark age system. I get what he's saying about how in Civ 6 you have to keep expanding or risk stagnation like in Glubb's writing, but the whole thing seems forced. It really should have just been a video about Glubb with a small aside about Civ 6 if he wanted. From the perspective of a youtuber though, I totally get why you would want to mention a video game in every video, specifically in the title and thumbnail. Video games and talking about the history portrayed in them is definitely going to get more clicks than just a normal video essay.

For another video I actually really quite like, is the "How does CIV handle the End of History." I really like the second half of the video where he talks about Lyotard and The End of Narratives.

Overall, I think his channel is interesting if nothing else. Its obviously unfortunate that Rosencreutz falls into a lot of the traps that leftist academics tend to fall into, but they mostly tend to not get in the way of what he actually wants to say. If nothing else his videos are entertaining in the way that you can think of counterpoints and arguments without getting angry or feeling like he is looking down on opposing viewpoints. At least for me I go more, "I disagree because..." rather than "This guy is just a leftist writing a politically or ideologically driven hit-piece." His recent Vampire Games video sucks though. Don't watch it; way too long.

One of the worst things that Stalin did was not kill more Trotskyites internationally.

Yeah, this video definitely felt off. Some parts of the alternate history that I would think are important were seemingly glossed over or ignored entirely. I saw this a week ago now, but iirc the details of the White victory and the collapse of the Reds were either omitted or rushed.

Yeah, it's pretty clear from recent output that he enjoys PointlessHub more. If he enjoys that more, he should just focus on that for the time being. I get the sense his fanbase would be fine with this. We shouldn't get another Angry Joe moment where he spergs at his community about wanting to take a break from his main attraction - what made him famous.

If you like this guy's content, that's fine by me. But I listened to this guy for about 10 minutes and I already hate him. His videos have a clear, crisp presentation with a sheen of consummate effeminacy that really gives his queerness a big boost.

You are correct though in that his videos are framed more like a retort than a smearing, which I appreciate, but I don't trust. Leftists like him, even if they present in good faith, always argue in bad faith. One example that comes to mind is a leftist Youtuber and his video on Castro that was mentioned earlier in this thread. He also still has that condescending "looking down on" attitude, just in a subtler way, usually indicated in inflection and tone. Remember, leftist men like him condescend like women not men.

This is just my immediate impression of him. If you like him after watching him, that's great. I just don't like him. I also checked his Twitter profile. It's got his pronouns. Generally, in my experience watching Youtube, if a person: (i) has pronouns in his bio, (ii) is British; then they got nothing to say.

spends most of the video talking about John Glubb and the 250 year limit for empires meme
It's funny hearing that it's a meme. On pensées more of philosophy than history, I came across a pdf copy of his "Fate of Empires" about a year ago. I knew next to nothing about it so I gave it a read. It was a good read. I wasn't aware that it was a meme though lol. Also, looking at the Amazon reviews, it's funny that people find his English hard to read. Like, nigger, have you ever tried reading The Canterbury Tales?

Looks like Norman Caruso, the Gaming Historian is basically calling it quits. I never really liked his stuff much. It's also hard to believe this was his full-time job since he only ever put out a few a year and they weren't all great.

Hello everyone, For the past few weeks, I’ve been on break, unwinding from the chaos of getting this Oregon Trail video done. I have to admit, it has been nice. I’ve played some video games (for fun, not research!), I worked on some tasks around the house (my air conditioner needed a cleaning real bad), I’ve gone on long walks with my wife, Kristin, and I picked up woodworking projects I had abandoned a few months ago. During this time I’ve also been reflecting on my life and thinking about the future of this show. While I still enjoy making the show, it consumes most of my life. Whenever I finish up a big project the immediate thought in my head is - “Ok…next video.” I’d like to get back to that feeling of wanting to make a video rather than having to make a video. There are also other things I’d like to pursue and accomplish, and I don’t feel that is possible while making a YouTube show full-time. So I’ve made the tough decision to take a step back from Gaming Historian. Nothing sinister, I just felt like it was time. Because I will no longer be producing the show full-time, I will be shutting down my Patreon. I first launched the Patreon back in 2015, when I made Gaming Historian my full-time job. It was a huge help toward not only financial security, but elevating the production level of my content. But since YouTube will no longer be my full-time career, I’m not comfortable collecting donations anymore. If you’d like to continue to support the show, the best way you can is to simply watch the videos on YouTube! I also plan to stream on Twitch from time to time, so I hope you’ll pop in and say hello. (http://www.twitch.tv/gaminghistorian) So what will I do with my new free time? I’m going to keep improving my woodworking. I’m planning on visiting my family more often. I’d like to finish my masters degree. I’m also co-hosting a history/comedy podcast with my wife, Kristin, something we have wanted to do for a long time. It's called An Old Timey Podcast - check it out if you're interested! (https://audioboom.com/channels/513013.... Fair Warning: It's not family-friendly like this show. I do want to make one thing clear: Gaming Historian is not going away. I’ll still be working on videos. But it will go back to being what it was when I started the show 16 years ago - a hobby that I work on in my spare time. Thank you all again for your support over the years. And, as always… thanks for watching! - Norm
