I give it about 5 years before proliferation of what they learned causes the Abrams to start taking losses at the rates the stripped-down export models did, and probably from simple man-portables like RPGs.

The biggest lagging technology in the sino-russo alliance, but particularly among the chinese, is barrel stabilization and targeting systems.

You can't strip the chobham from a tank made entirely of chobham, and that's what made these things durable against most weapons that would take out other tanks.
Now they have that and the armor will be rendered useless with about a year of R&D and 4 years for proliferation to Iranian militias and Houthis.

They aren't export versions, but they are the older M1A1 variant, with an older version of Chobham. The current Chobham is Dorchester, which is fitted to the challenger 2. A variant of it is fitted to the M1A2. The Leo doesn't have chobham at all.

The thing is, just having access to the armour doesn't mean all that much. You can analyse a ceramic and find out much of its composition, but that doesn't necessarily give you the information required to produce it, given there are chemical changes that occur during mixing and firing that produce the final composition. Even the order in which ingredients are added can have profound effects. This assumes you even have the capability to begin replicating the process, which Russia clearly doesn't at the moment.

The soviet union developed a similar ceramic cast armour around the same time as the British developed chobham. They weren't able to maintain parity with the west for long, but they had it at the time.

Chobham is set to be replaced in the next decade anyway. It's nearly 60 years old at this point, and technically obsolete compared to the current advances in weapons technology.

Who is getting multiple felony charges thrown at them? Where is the FBI hunting down each and every one of them? When people are spending years in jail waiting trial for misdemeanors, then we can talk about the gloves coming off on them.

The response is definitely more severe, but they're still getting treated with kids gloves.
