So it seems like a disproportionate amount of people (at least compared to what I'd expect) I encounter don't seem to get when I'm being tongue-in-cheek, ironic, etc. It seems to me like it should be obvious, especially given that I'm a usually being a smirking or completely deadpan asshole, but it seems to go over the heads of a lot of people (or I have autism).

So, am I the autist, or is (most) everyone else?

There was a really old thread (I think it dated back to 2018) that had an autism test, you should do it and post your score.

In my experience, a vast majority of the people you meet in the world are just really, really dumb. To make it even worse most of them have the most insufferable senses of humor. just look at all of the "comedy" movies that keep coming out of Hollywood to get a feel for the types of people General Audiences really are at heart. Look at things like all of those parody films around the post-2000s, all of the "rom-coms" (*vomits*) released in the past 20 years that are always the exact same movie, the milquetoast comedies that are always the exact same movie, and even the ones that go for absurdity and are hard to classify, which a style of comedy which is usually right up most of our alleyways but Hollywood never, ever manages to nail or even seem to understand.

I hesitate to even use the word "normies" or "normal". Most people are just soulless and don't have much in the way of wit or charm. These are the same kind of people who used to find Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia funny, so don't expect a Random to laugh at anything that has real value or cleverness.

You're posting on Kiwifarms, so the chances you're 100% neurotypical are pretty small. That said, it depends on what you're saying. You could be being tongue in cheek about things you shouldn't be or in a culture where that is not the style of humor for most people. Are you English, or in an Anglo-based culture? Did the situation provide a clue as to what made your words funny? If no to both, then the problem is you. If yes, then most people are morons and don't know when to laugh if there's not a laugh track doing it for them first. Why else would The Big Bang Theory be so successful in the US?

I like the diesel train with the crane arm that wants to dominate Thomas.

Yeah, even though you're right I guess there's a charitable/naive part of my brain (and, I think, the brains of many others) that sees an otherwise relatively intelligent person laughing at something ridiculously banal and thinks that they are just somehow seeing it "differently". Especially, considering my own flaws increases the plausibility in my optimism-addled mind that I'm the one who's "not getting it", while the sad truth is that probably at least 90% of people are just cosmic detritus with no particular insight or wit.
