Weightlifting for Kiwis - Discussion and support regarding the art of swole

My diet isn't great but it isn't terrible. What gives me issues are the meds I have to take (they suppress appetite and can cause hard to lose weight gain) and the fact I'm really into pasta. But is there a "go to eat this and you will be fit" sorta cook book? I have to get healthy for my heart (again related to meds, the Drs all say I need to get into shape) so I don't mind most of my meals being the same crap.
At the end of the day, no miracle-fit cookbook will outpace a bad appetite, the best advice I can give that I hope others back - going to make an assumption here - is for you to buy a blender and max out your daily required caloric intake to be able to gain weight, when I was trying to bulk to 245 this did wonders for me over 5 months, here's my shake recipe:

-2 Cups Oats
-2 Tbsp Greek yogurt or close enough brand
-1 Tbsp peanut-butter
-3 Scoops protein powder
-1 Tbsp seeds (Optional)
-1 Tsp cinnamon
-Water as filler ( Or, very occasionally, Milk).

Drinking one of these daily with my lunch got me my 3.5 plate bench when before I could barely get to 2.5 - it's not a miracle shake, it just showcases how poorly my regular meals were and how this helped a lot.

What exactly is the point of deadlifts? I once heard someone say "you only practice deadlifts to get better at deadlifts".
When I first started doing deadlifts years ago (standard, none of that sumo shit) my body began to grow in mass. I did them because it genuinely added mass to by back like no other. Granted there was an ego component to it as it's very easy go get big numbers when you're young and free of injuries, but they added mass to me.
Grip strength, spinal muscles
The only positive it'll say about hex Bar deadlifts is that it keeps your muscle imbalances in check, which can't be said for traditional deadlifts since people tend to prefer one form of supinated grip.
I am genuinely extremely concerned seeing all these Zoomers hop on gear in record numbers, and while it's kind of gay at least he's trying to help.
Honestly. There's a few broccoli boys at my gym do obvious on gear. And they all seem to have the same phenotype, if that makes sense. All trying to copy Sam Sulek
Are forearm curls worth doing? Or are bicep/preacher curls enough?
I prefer that bar attached to a string you spin. Just find something to lay your forearm on so you don't ture your shoulders first.
I'm far from an expert but this seems like a great way to overtrain one muscle group and get an imbalance compared to full ROM.
one thing I did to increase my pull up while in the Marines is to only go 3/4ths of the way down and hold it at the top. This was because while doing pull ups it was getting my chin over the bar that cost me points a few times.

I'd like to add weight training to my routine now that the kids are getting older and giving me more unbroken lengths of time where I can concentrate on one task without having to tend to someone. I already have a solid cardio routine and active lifestyle, but going to the gym is realistically not going to happen often enough to justify the membership, so I'm looking for options to do at home. This is almost alien to me as I've always had access to the gym and gravitated towards machines rather than weights/dumbbells etc.
If it helps at all in situating where I'm at and what would be right for me, I'm about 5'8 and 138 lbs and happy with my appearance, just wanting to add definition and ensure the continued well-being of my joints and muscles. What are good exercises that I could look up that would yield me the best time invested to result ratio, and how do I figure out what kind of weights to use/how heavy they should be? Am I looking for something that I can consistently lift for many reps, or something that creates real strain after a few sets of reps? I'm really going in blind and haven't purchased anything yet, and would appreciate guidance. Thank you!
Weighted calisthenics are very easy to get into if you're saving up for a squat rack setup or otherwise don't have the space. Dips and pull-ups are like bread and butter, and you've got the option to add weight on them if you're already able to crank them out for shittons of reps. Push-ups and pistol squats will also always be available. The nice thing about adding weight to most bodyweight movements is that you can just put it in a backpack if need be - granted, I have torn a couple old backpacks up in the process, so be wary of how it holds up.
There's multiple approaches when it comes to training, ranging from time under tension to simply going up in reps or weight. Personally, I've been doing 3x8-3x12s on bodyweight movements, and if weighted I'll increase if I manage to get the max amount of reps I'm looking for from each set.

Salami's post reminded me of how arm wrestlers sometimes do pull-ups while going down only half the way, so as to shift the focus of the movement from the back to focusing heavily on the brachioradialis instead. Partials have their uses if you know what you're trying to get out of them.

I've been doing calistenics for around two years strong so far, pull ups and chin ups as composite exercises, complemented with pushups, rope skipping, squats with dumbbels and running. I got results, but Ive been slowly progressing so far, i went for needing momentum to complete 4sets of 5-6reps, to do full body motion lowering my body to the full extent of my arms and pulling up my whole body while maintaining a rigid posture. It's really exhausting, but i can perform 5 to 6 the proper way until i reach failure in the last repetition of the fourth set. I dont perform both variations the same day, i alternate between one and next day another complemented with dips/push ups, This always leave me too strained to perform the another.

Im considering signing up to the local gym since now I have a steadier income in order to perform a similar routine doing composite workout but with weighs (bench press, squat, deadlift,etc.).
What do you guys think.

Yeah, when you start getting that mass on your upper body, that shit feels good. Personally I prefer exercising those muscles with the pulleys since I can larp as a dock worker, but so long as my back gets worked out, I'm golden. It feels amazing taking a nice hot shower after that sort of workout, drying off and then going to bed feeling like pic related:

People talk about leg day, but nobody talks about back day.

The plan now is to compete in August, September, and December this year, maybe more if some local thing pops up. Everyone is telling me that white belt is the best time to compete, as it never gets easier lol. Coach, as well as other black belts, have told me that competing is like free EXP in a video game, and I believe it. I feel like even after one tournament I've improved measurably, and it was a lot of fun even if scary when I got on the mat.
I'm someone who likes to have a plan, so here's what's going to happen. I take BJJ twice a week, with one open mat I can make. I take Judo once a week, and it's possible for me to take a wrestling class once a week as well but it really depends on what day I have off work so I'll make that when I can. I have been slowly bulking, I'm now at 185. I want to compete in the under 181 like last time, easy to make that weight. My main offense is chokeholds, I'm OK at joint locks but I feel chokes work better for me in and out of gi. I have solid defense, the guys at the gym joke I have gills, and I have no fear of leg locks because I love 50/50 guard and am dangerous there.
I have also been practicing a technique Coach calls "head high camping", a method to cook and pass someone who's on bottom half guard or knee shield. I have had good success with it, even and especially when I go to other gyms open mats it is wacky powerful for me. My best choke is a ninja choke, a darce, and various collar chokes from the back. My best locks are kneebars from k guard, armbars from 50/50, and Americanas.
I'm very excited to compete again once my schedule is sorted out more.

This Mexican dude "El Campeón" (the champion) got noticed by Ronnie.

It was funny at first but now it's become quite sad to watch. Dude is beyond delusional, and is well on his way to Snap City.

EDIT: And speaking of memes,

I hope he El Campeon doesn't become too mainstream. He's a funny lolcow in the lifting community that is funnier when he thinks he is lifting heavy. If he becomes a mainstream lolcow, it won't be funny anymore

I'll be real I just completely left the entire lifting scene, save like four channels, because it's an unholy cesspool of gay retard drama and it's just not fun anymore.
Bodybuilding is still my love and I owe it so much because of how it improved my life, but I just can't stand to see the thing I love be so toxic. Legit toxic, this beautiful and amazing pursuit of sculpting yourself through physical training turned into a destructive force that is directly harming those who it should have saved.
I'll never stop, I'll train until I die, but I'm done with the community.

For personal reasons I dropped out of the gym for the last few couple months. I just couldn't focus mentally like I should, and I was not gonna risk getting injured. Feels bad, I know, but I'll get back into it soon.

It's why seeing that retarded Mexican fucking around in the gym doesn't sit well with me. If anything, the dudes recording him - and now pushing his merch, are making him a disservice. The day when he gets injured, he's gonna have to eat a big fat piece of humble pie, but like you say, only then the lifting scene will gang up on him and go "oh noooo but we tried to warn him!! what went wrong??". But they won't do it out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it for the clicks and the algorithm.

Anyways, here's a very interesting docu about Dorian. Unlike that Mexican clown, he could move some pretty serious weight in his prime.

Dorian is a fucking G. He was one of the best, and later the best, bodybuilder of his era for a reason. I really enjoy his perspective on his own story, he’s a very smart man who understands that what he did is not for everyone but he’s proud of what he accomplished.
His training videos were like holy scrolls for me back when I started, I still hear “LETS GET NASTY” when I’m pushing through a hard set. Classic.

It's embarrassing to watch.

Also, I keep hearing that he gets kicked out of every gym he's going, since -of course- no owner would put up with his bullshit and also, he's fucking around with the equipment. The last thing you need is a broken Smith machine because of a Mexican schizo ego lifter.

We need an order sissy six on this guy immediately

Dude.
Today I grappled with a 250lb, 6'3" college football play from New Orleans who just graduated. He started last week because we wanted a new sport and BJJ sounded like fun. We were paired up all class for half-guard sweeps and dogfight, and this nigga is fucking strong.
It was a great time, he's a good dude and he was a very good student. But he is the heaviest thing I have ever had actively try to crush me. I have pinned myself under a 300-lb bench, and that was nothing compared to this man desperately trying to figure out what to do when we rolled. When I started in his guard, I just had to pin him and hope.

Just watched El Champion, that is the scariest shit I have seen and I want no part of it.

Im moving into a place with the room for a home gym, anybody have a good power rack recommendation? Cant decide if I want one with a pulley system or not.

If you just want to do pull downs you can attach a pulley to pretty much any rack. If you want to be able to chest flies etc. you'll need something designed with that in mind, which is usually quite expensive compared to a basic bitch rack.

Watch your local Craigslist / Facebook marketplace / thrift stores, buying out someone else's used home gym will be much cheaper than getting equipment from any retailer.
