What makes a good RPG?

I like all the typical RPGs you see talked about all the time, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario, Pokemon, Earthbound etc etc

But has anyone here played Tales of Eternia? It's a re-release of a PS1 game called Tales of Destiny II. The PS1 version was released in 2000/2001 and the PSP version in 2005/2006 (depending on region of course).

I bought the game for my PSP when it was released back in 2006 and I was hooked, and I played it again a few years ago and enjoyed it just as much if not more.

It has a really good art style, detailed character sprites and really well rendered 2D backgrounds. It even has some decent voice acting! The battle system is fun, you can run back and forth on a 2D plane and you set buttons or button combinations to do certain attacks or spells you've learned, or select items/escape from a menu. I really like the plot and characters also, but it would take far too long to explain here.

I remember enjoying Jade Cocoon on the PS1 as well, the art style was done by Studio Ghibli from what I remember. I tried to play it a few years ago and I still enjoyed it although that may just be nostalgia, I'm not sure it'd hold up as well for newcomers but may be worth a shot.

Another obscure PS1 RPG I remember playing back then was Koudelka. I really liked the art style of this game, it's almost like a Resident Evil/Silent Hill Survival Horror mixed with an RPG. I really had high hopes initially but the battle system is so unfair, slow paced and difficult that it just made me give up a few hours into the game.

One of my favorite PS1 RPGs that I rarely see mentioned is the Arc the Lad series! Especially Arc the Lad II, the first one I played. Pure nostalgia for me. It's set in modern times and the English translation kept the Japanese voices in battle, which I love for some reason.

I could sperg about old RPGs all day but I think I'd better cut it off here. Other ones I have fond memories of are Star Ocean games, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Grandia II, Radiant Historia and Disgaea.
The problems with Koudelka was addressed in its sequel, Shadow Hearts. I think it was a lot easier making a RPG with spoopy themes than a survival horror RPG.

To give credit where credit is due, the idea of a survival horror RPG does have a lot of untapped potential. If you don't have any moral problems with emulating, I'd really recommend you try out Sweet Home to see what I'm talking about. It mixes survival horror and RPG elements into a weird hybrid while still managing to be (mostly) fair, and it's aged extremely well compared to the other RPGs of the time. If a modern horror RPG was made with Sweet Home's mechanics as the framework I think something great could come out of it.

It's also my favourite NES game so I'm whoring it out to get other people to play it

Sigh no love for Xenogears

Anything Wild Arms is good except 5 which is meh. You like 4 and 5 over 6?

There are some decent RPGMaker games out there.

Xenogears is one of my favourite RPGS of all time, same with FF6. Just 4 was one of the first I played. It's just a shame that Xenogears was rushed on the second disk. Still a great game and a great cast of characters.

Oh yeah, I definitely played Sweet Home. It wasn't exactly scary but it had some interesting ideas. Could use a facelift.

Plus, Halloween is near.

I guess it depends, a good story helps me feel engaged in what I'm playing. Most RPGs are tedious by nature, so having a reason to put up with said tedium is never a bad thing. Gameplay wise I like RPGs that break the mold somewhat, like Shin Megami Tensei or Final Fantasy 7.

Do you enjoy the earlier tales games?

When I got Tales of Eternia on the PSP in 2006 I wasn't even aware it was a re-release, but a few years ago I downloaded an ISO of Tales of Destiny for the ps1 and played through a good amount of it and I enjoyed it. There's also the SNES one that was never released outside of Japan from what I remember, but I downloaded a translated ROM and played a little. I would like to go back and complete these games some day, but so many RPGs so little time.

If you're going to play Tales of Phantasia again, you really should try the Playstation remake. The SNES version didn't age very well IMO.

Replayability and collectable shit helps as long as it's not overly out of the way and self-motivated, if that makes sense. a fantastic RPG (or at least a game I consider one) is the Way of the Samurai series, especially the first one. Every sword has its own moves and fighting style, and your choices influence the game so much so that it's purposefully built for playing again because it has seven different possible endings.

Also I prefer a silent protag or at least an unvoiced one. Fallout 4 sucked for many reasons but the shitty male voice actor for the Survivor was up there for me as one of the worst aspects.
