Sneedforo & Reactions: The Future of Stickers

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Why not mostly keep the reactions we have now, maybe add some more to fill in common responses that are missing, but get rid of the scores and add a tally you can look at on your profile like you mentioned? Having every unicode character would just make reactions a mess and remove any meaning attatched to a particular reaction.

Copy discord but don't allow for all unicode emojis and have a select 20-30 of them. I think more reaction options is better, there's alot of emotions that you should be able to convey with reactions that you cant with the current system.
Too many reactions would be bad though, there's no reason to react with '🔃' or most emojis.

Basically, use the discord-like display for the reactions but limit them to special kiwifarms centric stickers. The current ones + 20 more or something. Best of both worlds

My unsolicited proposal:

1. A reasonably small core set of forum-wide reactions. Ex: Like, dislike, feels, thunk, informative, islamic content, optimistic.
2. Subforums and threads can have special locally available reactions. These should be fairly easy to petition for based on lolcow or subculture specific in-jokes. TWIST: If you have posted in that subforum or thread for some time and are in good standing by arbitrary and vacuous criteria, you can now use those reacts elsewhere as well. This could even be granted by the local jannies as some form of good boy points instead of having any automation.

It is indeed quite similar to how it is now with T&H extra reactions.

your post is shit, kill yourself

everything else is fluff - less is more. add in 1 or 2 for T&H and jobs done

edit: i just realised the above wasn't really on-topic. for what it's worth, i think the current system is good. some people don't like it, but there'll always be people who don't like change. curbstomping anything that reinforces echo-chamber posting is a good thing.

While I lost my 2014 account in the great 2022 reset, I do remember the Null's DOTA2 avatar (as well as a different forum smiley that was lost to time). The Like button was called "Mm, yeah".

When stickers were introduced, they were used as backdoor moderating, which Null hated and told them to just report posts as there as a small picture of a janny sweeping up Autistic and Dumb stickers (in their FamFamFam Silk appearances).

The problem is that the sticker notifications make the problem of "feature tourism" worse because people just shit on threads and leave.

Solution #1: Go back to a simple Like system. No Dislike/Dumb/Disagree. If you Disagree, say so. If it's Dumb, say so or report.
Solution #2: Re-introduce sticker notifications but only for negative ratings. This eliminates the "collecting lucky charms" dopamine hit that Null wants to avoid while also telling people that their posts are poor quality.

Then you just have people terrified to open the forums because they're worried they'll get negged. This is learned behavior which caused people to have hundreds of people in group messages because they didn't want to hurt their review score. You need both positive and negative notifications or none at all.

Priorotising the 3 most used reactions is instant accessibility while people curious about the total tally of each sticker can quickly check the ”Members who reacted to message” window. Having a tally is more information sure but that isn’t always a good thing especially for each post, that just means decreased instant readability. Maybe having the total number on highlighted posts only would be beneficial though.

The fact that the neg-rating notification existed until like two months ago means that there won't be any change, because there have been a lot of posts that probably shouldn't have been made, and unlike Reddit, low-rated posts aren't hidden automatically.

The issue with "no ratings at all" is because that only encourages baitposters because they post something outrageous and get the pleasure of all those replies. Just think how much posters like HHH manages to rile up A&N.

I disagree, that would encourage negativity.
The positive stuff would still exist, you just wouldn't get notified for it.

While I like the idea of their being a reaction tally table on profiles, I think the reactions are pretty good as it is. I'd like to see new reactions available but not at the cost of any reactions we already have, new subforum and thread specific reactions would be a neat feature (A TWU reaction for the KingcobraJFS thread for example). I also REALLY don't like the idea of changing how the reactions will be displayed on posts, I think it's perfect the way it is and if you want to see a list of all the reactions a post has received in a nice organized list you can literally just click on the reactions. It's not hard or inconvenient at all and it keeps everything looking neat and unobtrusive.

What if stickers were only usable for OPs?

The more I think about it, the less appealing it is to enable stickers for any replies to threads. This creates a deluge of boring "witty" Reddit-style comments that add nothing. Really good replies that actually add information can be highlighted or something if enough people vote for it.

I've never used either FB or Discord, so it's hard to tell what's best.

Honestly, I don't think it matters that much. As long as it works, we should be fine. Everybody will hate it for a little while and people will forget within a few weeks.

I've literally never had a problem with how the stickers are displayed currently. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What I have a problem with is how globohomo the stickers look. The old ones are so comfy and nice so if there's a way to bring those back or make custom ones for Sneedforo that would make my 'tisms very happy.
