Sneedforo & Reactions: The Future of Stickers

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I've literally never had a problem with how the stickers are displayed currently. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What I have a problem with is how globohomo the stickers look. The old ones are so comfy and nice so if there's a way to bring those back or make custom ones for Sneedforo that would make my 'tisms very happy.
It's all been downhill since the style went from pixel art to flat art emoji style stuff, that's practically letting the vampires in lmao.

Goofy artstyle shit aside, maybe it's because I've just kinda used reactions as an easy secondary way of seeing if threads I check in on have actual activity, especally the last few years where I don't get notifs for new posts a good chunk of the time. This sticker drama shit that's led to stuff being weird and flip flop change-wise is like a bunch of people demanding shit be changed or altered because "Oh it doesn't matter why do you care" and then they also clearly care because they want shit changed. I care because I like the funny little images. If anything was to be altered I'd say to just make it MORE goofy instead of turning it into some reddit/discord type stuff. Dumbasses are gonna get a complex about this shit no matter how it's structured so making them look even more retarded for feeling superior due to how many funny image ratings they have is probably the closest thing to a "way out" where ratings get kept intact.

Yeah, I don't remember when that was, but when the vector smilies were introduced, a lot of the older pixel stuff didn't fit (basically everything under the Christory tab). The worst part is that :heart-empty: and :heart-full: used to be animated.

I don't like the Discord idea. Do we want posts to be flooded with reactions that aren't relevant to the post?

I think the limited selection of stickers contributes to the forum's culture. The Fedi also supports the complete Unicode emoji set for reaction stickers, and while it can be funny in some ways I found it bland in comparison to this forum's handful that contribute to the Farms' humor.

I think one of the most important factors is picking a system that satisfies you personally, Null. As a moderator and autist you fret about stickers/reactions more than 99% of users and that sometimes leads to a Bad Mood. Whatever system you pick, make sure it's something that you feel confident you won't hate in two years and lash out at people who do like it. You have a much more specific idea of what stickers/reactions should mean than the average user. I think this is amply proven by making this detailed thread about something that the vast majority of people say "it just werks" already.

tl;dr: Null should pick a system he likes because he is in fact the biggest sticker autist on the site.

Navigating a large thread is very difficult but the easiest way to deal with that is the highlight system. One of the largest projects I have in mind is how I want to handle thread OPs.
Related: I'd like to suggest a thread viewing mode that only shows posts containing media.

A lot of the time the Highlights system doesn't pick up valuable posts containing video clips or screen shots for some reason.

And rather than scrolling through page after page of sperging to find new picture or video updates (that were not designated as Highlights), you could simply view the thread's media posts and catch up on all the new pics and videos of the cow.

This would be especially helpful in threads where majority of the content is social media posts made by a cow who posts stories/tweets nonstop, like The Empathic Mamahood thread, for example. She tends to upload 10-20 new videos and pics per day, but the farms posts archiving them rarely get Highlighted. So one has to scroll through the all the additional discussion to locate any actual new content. Which most of the time is fine because I usually want to read and participate, but sometimes I'm short on time and just want to get to the meat of the thread when getting caught up.

Apologies for being verbose.
TL;DR, Please consider a secondary Highlights-type function, but for displaying posts containing pics/video clips only.

I liked the old emojis better, and think we should bring them back along with a few of the ones that have been cut like "Off-topic", and "Null's Love".

I also think it wouldn't hurt to make some new ones like "Edgy" and "Glowie" given the unfortunate influx of fedposting in recent years.

Make a link to the reaction score thing, but if you click on it, make a script that @'s that person in a thread saying they care about their reaction score and calls them a name.

2. Copy Discord. Just flat out copy Discord, make every Unicode character a possible reaction, and then allow custom reacts exactly like they do which show up above the generics. You would still be limited to 1 reaction, instead of Discord's kitchen sink.
This, but only allow the 'dark skinned' variants of every handshake emoji. And the Basmala of course.

More ain't better, so keep the ones we have.

I do like the idea of "Like 6, Dumb 3, Disagree 1, MATI 206" showing below the post rather than the current 3 reacts with no real info. As far as a score card, whatever. It's not that important other than to completionist speds.

Jersh, I've got your answer right here, because I know how much you love this stuff: implement an XP system that lets users 'level up' for making posts and receiving positive ratings. That will definitely improve post content on the site, you have my word.

In all seriousness, I don't like the Discord approach because as others have said it's unsightly and takes up too much space. I do like the idea of showing all unique ratings a post has received and how many, but I'd keep it limited to the reactions we currently have; it's the quickest, clearest way to ascertain how a post has been received in the thread.

The given/received thing on the profile is also something I'd prefer to the user score, but I'd consider it a nice to have rather than a necessary change.

The positive stuff would still exist, you just wouldn't get notified for it.
I don't understand the aversion to being notified or given a dopamine hit for making good, agreeable posts. Null seems to think it's a bad thing too.
If users are using the pozrates on posts they like and getting pozrates makes you feel good, there's a general incentive to make likeable posts.
You can still get that pozrate dopamine by autistically clicking the reaction received tray every few minutes, so removing the option to get it in the notification tray is just removing UI that lots of people used, which is kinda dumb.
Its fine though, Null's not gonna listen to me and it's not actually that bad the way it currently is. I just miss the convenience of it all being in one spot.

As for the look of the stickers that people have been discussing, I actually love how they look. The kiwi farms has a very unique style to it and the flat globohomo stickers fit very well in my opinion.

Example of how ratings used to be displayed:

I think the Facebook option is better for picking reactions, but go back to the old way of displaying them under the post, like you showed in this image. The Post Ratings table is also a neat idea.

If it doesn't require loads of coding, could be cool to have it so each post develops a gradient depending on what rating is used, especially if the ratings that are included are reduced down to a smaller selection. Likes go green, dislikes go red, dumbs go brown, etc. etc.
