My opinion is split on this because even though it seems like it requires hospital care, hospital care means being around horrible infections, plus hospitals are fucking Hell. I know two ancient dudes who got the one knee at a time double knee replacement thing, both times outpatient, and I suggested this was kind of sick and cheap, and they said they'd rather be anywhere than a hospital.
Yeah, same. Although ortho is a lot less worrisome to go home with than a potential gusher like a hysterectomy or thyroid. They're not waking you up in the taxi; you still have to graduate PACU and then the physical therapist checks you out again in Short Stay, which is more time to decide that you need to be inpatient after all. A crusty old person who's been dealing with chronic joint pain is more likely to be able to cope after work on that joint, and to be highly motivated to go back home to cable TV and their dogs.
The people I've met who decided on simultaneous knees are the most opinionated, least-time-to-fuck-around people on the planet. Lots of farmers and old nurses.

Sometimes we can have nice things!
The two I knew also said they'd have done both at once but they were advised otherwise. They said it hurt like hell but the knee worked so well afterward they wanted the other one working too. Of course these weren't giant pussies, either. One of them is now 80 years old and spent his last summer building a wall, just because he wanted one, and is now going to spend next summer building another wall, just because he wants another.
