Another A&N crosspost. Basically butthurt transit authorities continue to deny their systems are crime-filled money sinks, and blame suburbs who barely benefit but contribute just as much, for getting cold feet.
God I can hear the smooth brains whining already "wHy DoN't ThE sUbUrB pEoLpE pAy MoRe" fark me, maybe the short fares in the city should be cranked up to nosebleed levels to cover the costs, it's not as if the person paying a token amount to ride a few stops is paying anywhere near what it costs to provide service for that short distance.

The only ones that are worse are the ones that bitch long/medium distance train riders don't pay enough and 'clog up the trains' when they have like 5 different transport modes they can use vs the 2 options you have if you are far enough out(Train or Car, but you know 'fuck cars' xD )

So in this video City Nerd complains about more walkability on the streets of Long Beach even hinting at a road diet but lets look at the Average Daily Traffic of Long Beach (2014):

Now the road that City Nerd appears to be on is Ocean Blvd that has about 30,000 average vehicles per day. Other main thoroughfares in the city appear to have around 25,000 to 30,000 depending on the segments. But what is the average daily traffic that a road diet can accommodate?
Knapp, Giese, and Lee have documented Road Diets with ADTs ranging from 8,500 to 24,000 vpd.37 The FHWA advises that roadways with ADT of 20,000 vpd or less may be good candidates for a Road Diet and should be evaluated for feasibility.
Such, a road diet on the main thoroughfares of the city is not advisable due to the high number of vehicles, which exceed the highest vpd estimate by 20%.

The whole idea behind road diet is to get people on the fucking "stroads". One admitted problem with US infrastructure is so much of it is built on wide street grids that people will use whatever street/road is shortest, which does level the car usage out across roads but can also get people doing 45 mph down a side-street.

Road diets make those side streets "feel slower" so people go to the arterials instead, which then get called "stroads" and complained about, too. But by getting traffic onto arterials and highways, you make transit MORE effective.
 
How do they function in modern life?
They don't, otherwise they'd wouldn't turn hating cars into their whole personality.
The other is that transfers are a transit killer.
Miss chances aren't really the big issue in my experience, waiting around for your next train is because most stations will have like 4 benches per platform so you have to stand around for half an hour between trains if you're travelling outside a metro area so it massively increases your travel time.

I would have gone for building a few pedestrian bridges or even creating a central island that can house supports for an elevated walkway, but we all know that spending millions on dedicated infrastructure purely for pedestrians means that you're actually a carbrain that wants people to be forced into using cars at all times for some inane reason.
But by getting traffic onto arterials and highways, you make transit MORE effective.
It's also the reason that suburban developments are usually cut off from each other, since having a large amount of through traffic just makes it miserable for everyone involved. I'd argue that pedestrian walkways should be built in for better walkability, but that's a minor nitpick and only relevent to places that have anything worthwhile in walking distance.

A court found this violated the 1st amendment, but that hasn't stopped other towns from trying it.

Yeah, that's the rub isn't it? Can't use a side street because it's being cucked for a "road diet", can't use an avenue because muh stroads, can't use a freeway because freeways are bad. The funny thing is that the same line of thinking usually has "turn freeways into boulevards" which can be seen in San Francisco (Central Freeway stub removal), Oklahoma City (rerouting of I-40), Fort Worth (rerouting of I-30), Dallas (removal of S.M. Wright Freeway after being replaced by a new connector ramp), and Rochester (disused and outdated highway loop).

However, because they play fast and loose with the "stroad" definition, those are now all "stroads" and ALSO bad. You can't win with these people, the only way is to not play.

The whole idea of "white flight" is ridiculous because it simultaneously assumes that white people are racist by not wanting darkies in their neighborhood while also implicitly implying that white people are the sole reason why the neighborhoods thrived in the first place.

I think he deleted at least one of his posts about McDonald's rejecting him (specifically); a pure troll wouldn't do that. Secondly, the whole thread is super-gay, between Jason's love affair with Olly, the subreddit logo (and it's not even June), that one comic where the Redditor fantasizes about getting pegged...and a lot of the subreddit's base is teenagers and stay-at-home losers. The idea of being a loser AND faggot is not a rare one.
