I'm building a PC with a Ryzen 5 5500 and a RX 6600 with little to no RGB and a 550w PSU. How much wattage/VA do I need in an uninterruptible power supply? Total wattage usage for my system in ~320W. Is APC still a good brand?
I think you are good with 550w. You can choose any brand of psu, but make sure you get one that is at least bronze certified for energy efficiency. I'm running a Ryzen 5 5500G with an MSI RTX 3070 on a 500W bronze Cooler Master psu from my old build without any issues, even when the card starts to work hard on demanding games.

Yeah, I'm getting a 80+ bronze PSU but I'm more worried about what wattage UPS unit I need to get. I don't need it to power my PC for more than 30 seconds since I have a generator that kicks in within 20 seconds.

I don't wanna be rude and you probably have all this covered but I feel the need to check - How are you handling stuff like phase alignment and backfeed protection with a domestic generator setup that will automatically spin up inside 20 seconds in the event of a grid power loss? That stuff can be very difficult to get right if you want uninterrupted operation of a sensitive electronic device like a PC.

I haven't messed with this stuff in years but IIRC at minimum you're going to need one of the more expensive 'active line conditioning' UPS in the APC line, and that precludes any of the lower capacity units.

Didn't knew APC was a UPS manufacturer also, I thought they only made peak suppressors, then I can't help you, I don't know much about that topic. Good luck regardless.

Has anyone ever had success running a multi-WAN router setup? If so, what router are you using?
I have a lot of experience with SonicWall devices, they do dual (or more) WAN as either failover or it can do load balanced round robin. The address object style of firewall/NAT rules makes it nice if your IP changes, as you just update the address object used in a particular rule and the rules automatically update.

If you have a generator backup, any desktop UPS will handle 30 seconds of full load. You can also set it up so the UPS sends a shutdown signal if the battery gets too low, like if your gen doesn't kick on.

I have no idea what any of that means which is why I paid a company to install the generator lol. It's not some gasoline generator you get at Home Depot, more like a professional set up for a business but for a home. I had a transformer blow down the road from me and it didn't fry any of my electronics so I'm assuming everything is good on my end.

That's what I was thinking but every article I found was saying I needed a 900W UPS unit which is insane for a barely mid-range PC. I'll go with an APC one since I used to use one of those back in the day.

Thanks for all the help and feel free to correct me if I'm being a retard.

900w/1500va is about right. Your UPS needs to have higher capacity than your PSU, and not by a slim margin either. And you optimally want a true sine wave rather than simulated sine wave.

As was mentioned you want some headroom. I like the CyberPower lately, just got a new sinewave one, but I haven't even plugged it in yet. My systems over the years have outgrown the previous ones. Don't be like me, oversize things a bit.

You will have to replace batteries, timespan will vary but it's important to test them periodically, either manually or having the software set to do it. Nothing worse than the UPS saying "10 minutes" and then it runs 10 seconds and powers off.

I think I’m over complicating it from poor memory, what the other replies above said about needing a ‘pure sine wave’ ups sounds right and should cover it. I think this is the same as being an ‘active’ or line-conditioning UPS.
The quick explanation is that AC power comes in as a waveform that oscillates up and down. When the mains power goes out and your generator comes up, the waveform it puts out wont match in timing to the mains one. Your PC PSU can’t handle that waveform changing suddenly. A suitable UPS maintains the waveform going into your PC even if the input power waveform changes, and can re-align the waveform slowly to match a differing input. Lower end UPS units don’t do this.

You convinced me, I'll be getting this one. Thanks for all the help!

So, I have a bunch of parts laying around and wondering what should I do with them. Any ideas?

  • Ryzen7 2600x
  • MSI b450 Pro motherboard
  • 16 GB of RAM
  • 550 PSU
  • two 1 TB SSD One is for the OS and the other is for storage
  • I'm going to eventually get a new GPU, so it'll have a MSi GeForce 2060 RTX.

Those are all still fairly decent. You could turn it into some kind of file backups NAS, sell them, gift them to someone you know, or continue to let them sit as backup parts.

Yeah, I'm likely going to do one or the other. I can probably sell it for €600 and use that money to buy a new GPU.

henlo frens, does anyone know games where you can build your team/character with cards ala Fifa Ultimate Team / 2k MyTeam / etc pp. which doesnt require more than 2 braincells?

i just want to feel the addiction again of getting packs and building my own stuff without giving EA or 2K a single penny.

I'm having network connectivity issues.

Actually no. I'm having issues with my monitor though. Some days ago, it got this weird blue border around it. It's Samsung and I've had it for close to 4 years.

It looks something like this. Is it over for me? Should I kill myself?

That's like the effect old CRT TVs had if it's that bad.
