James IS a film maker. He made one mediocre film but it was a film by any definition of the word.
I think you missed the point of my comment. I didn't deny he was a film maker, I just said that he considers himself a film maker. So if he considers himself a film maker, why did he decide to phone it for this anniversary where the other ones he put more effort in? A "real" film maker would have put in the effort, which is why I said he considers himself a film maker.

For sure. His shit about "I'VE DIRECTED 200 MOVIES SNIX FLIX SIX IS MY MASTERPIECE!" is retarded.

I honestly enjoyed the episode. You might yawn at that it was commentary only and that he sucks the dick of SC4 because he prefers the omni-directional whipping, but Egoraptor already tore him a new asshole with his sequelitis video so you can just attribute it as an opinion rather than a fact. To me, it was a comfy way to celebrate the anniversary. No bullshit, no god awful screenwave skits or scripts, just james speaking his thoughts about something he's passionate about. That's where he's at his best. Because while you can agree or disagree with him or hell even call him a cocksucking nigger for not thinking SOTN was the best castlevania, the fact is that you can still enjoy the video in your own way. It wasn't as cringe and shit as the horse episode or the shrek episode.

James got me into Castlevania. It's thanks to him that I gave the series a try and bought SOTN for my PSX. So this kind of video was pretty nice for me. He wasn't really trying to be pretentious either, he was just giving us some sort of relaxed closure to his castlevania videos from years ago. And honestly? I'm fine with that.

har har har muh kids no time 4pm FIVE OF UM!!!!!!!! FIVE OF UMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! is funny right gimme reddit gold kiwifarms brownie points now kthx

He mentions very briefly at the beginning of the episode that in the first ever AVGN he was "just a voice" and did not appear on camera, so for the 20th anniversary video he wanted to go back to his roots and be "just a voice" again.

Eh, new episode was ok but you can really tell James has no idea what he’s talking about when it comes to vidya, and can’t stand anything that involves the slightest amount of difficulty.

Dracula’s Curse was always my favorite of the old school Castlevanias. The knockback really isn’t that big a deal if you’re not a complete tard. Beat the game when I was 9. Super Castlevania is fun and really showed off what the snes was capable of back in the day, but looking pretty is about all it had going for it. Pretty easy game, good for a rainy afternoon but you’ll get no challenge from it.

His whole argument being “durr I can’t whip in all directions! Game sucks!” is just sad. Seems like if the game won’t hold his hand throughout the run, he shits on it.
James clearly lost interest in gaming after the 16-bit era, he makes this very obvious whenever he plays anything that came out after the SNES.

I saw James' final Fantasy 6 review and I honestly think that will be the last review of the AVGN that could ever be considered great.
You can tell that James clearly hasn't played a Final Fantasy game since VI came out since it's the only FF game that he has any frame of reference for, but at least you can tell that he actually grew up playing it from how passionately he talks about the game, when was the last time he talked about a game that he actually played?

Castlevania has been there since the beginning. Those games really do bring out the anger in all of us.
I really do like Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Genesis. I legit think it's underrated because dudes gush over "muh Castlevania 4!" and "muh Symphony!" or even "muh 8-16 bit retro glory!" The NES games and 4 from that era get talked about endlessly. And when Dracula X is referenced it's always in deference to what a horrifically bad port it was of Rondo. I would argue Dracula X is still an "okay" Castlevania title in a you've tried the best now try the rest kind of way.

There's a theory that the reason why Dracula X was a bad port goes back to Konami's contract with Hudson. Apparently, Rondo was a contractual exclusive and Konami legally could not port the same exact game. So, they took all the assets of Rondo and basically remade the entire game and called it Dracula X. Which makes sense considering the sheer number of changes. The number one thing I hate about Dracula X is that the movement is slower than the other games. It's hard to describe in text but play the 8 bit games and 4 or Bloodlines and especially Rondo and then go play Dracula X where you quickly realize that your character moves like a slug in comparison.

Also, I noticed a trend with new AVGN's where Screenwave is exclusively focusing on big titles. Either a known game or IP or something based on an IP. Just another sign it's all coming to an end because I think everyone has their favorite obscure game review he's done. Like Day Dreaming Davy is a great example, or Lester the Unlikely. These are games that just wouldn't get reviewed today because they're too obscure and Screenwave can't ride the algorithm. The last time he reviewed something obscure would be The Last Ninja review almost 2 years ago.

Edit: you'd have to go even farther back, 4 years ago, for another obscure game review with The Immortal.

I like bloodlines better than 4. I'm a sucker for metroidvania games so I do like sotn more though. But I actually preferred aria of sorrow to sotn despite the gay anime shit. The magic system was cool but I think my favourite is actually order of ecclessia with the non-linear rom hack.

Dracula x always felt pointless to play when you could just play rondo of blood.

I wouldn't mind if he started just talking about good games and ditched the anger shtick for the most part. It's cringey watching him pretend to get angry about shit games he doesn't care about. I'd rather watch him be old and balding talking about good games he does care about even if it's not as angry and funny. Apart from avgn and board James my favourite videos he does are the monster madness ones, even though I don't really care that much about old horror movies, just because he actually enjoys those and gets passionate about them.

The worst part about new avgn isn't the stupid skits, or the slobs, or game footage ripped from Mike, or unfunny dialog, or the rapid onset baldness, it's watching someone talking about something he doesn't care about, has clearly never played, and pretending to get worked up and emotional about it. The only avgn episodes I've really enjoyed in the last while are the ones where he's talking about good games he actually used to play, because he actually gives a shit about those, as much as he gave a shit about the shitty games he's actually played from his older videos and it shows in the videos.

For me, my favorite AVGN episodes consist of Ghostbusters games, Silver Surfer, Virtual Boy, Wizard of Oz, Plumbers Don't Wear Ties and Tiger Electronics
My personal favorite AVGN episodes are: Transformers, X-Men, Atari Jaguar, Street Fighter 2010, Star Wars, Festers Quest, Rambo and Bible Games 2.

Because of this. I consider 2009-2011 my favorite years of the Nerd. As for recent episodes, The Jekyl and Hyde one from October last year was really good.

There is a remedy for that, and no, it doesn't really involve romhacking.... just torture yourself and play the Amiga version of Castlevania for an hour and X will feel like Sonic :lit:

I think he's better as just a voice
Cause we don't have to see his balding head.

In terms of modern AVGN (2020+), I liked the DOOM retrospective.
