The Simpsons voice actor Harry Shearer says recasting character has ‘affected’ show

The Simpsons star Harry Shearer has said recasting him with a Black actor has negatively “affected” one of the show’s main characters.

Shearer voices 20 characters on the animated series, including Mr Burns, Ned Flanders and Principal Skinner.

Until 2021, Shearer also voiced Springfield physician Dr Hibbert but found himself suddenly replaced amid calls to recast the show’s non-white characters, voiced by white actors.

The animated sitcom had been criticised for years for white actor Hank Azaria’s portrayal of Indian-American convenience store owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, a controversy explored in the documentary The Problem with Apu.

Another character who was recast was Dr Hibbert, who had been played by Shearer since 1990. The actor always said that he had played him as a parody of now-disgraced comedian Bill Cosby.

The physician is now voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson – and Shearer has suggested that the recasting has “affected” the effectiveness of the character.

Speaking to The Times, Shearer said: “Folk say the show has become woke in recent years and one of my characters has been affected.

“I voiced the black physician, Dr Hibbert, who I based on Bill Cosby. Back then he was known as the ‘whitest Black man on television’.

“Then, a couple of years ago, I received an email saying they’d employed a Black actor, who then copied my voice.

Shearer then questioned the effectiveness of Richardson’s performance as the character, stating: “The result is a Black man imitating a white man imitating the whitest Black man on TV.”

Dr Hibbert is not the only Black character on the series to be recast. Last year, Alex Désert made his debut as Homer’s friend and co-worker Carl Carlson, a role which had previously been voiced by Hank Azaria.

Fans reacted positively to the new voice work, with many claiming they “couldn’t tell the difference”.

Since the documentary The Problem with Apu debuted, Apu has been quietly sidelined.

Addressing the controversy surrounding his voicework on the show, Azaria said that he “helped create a dehumanising stereotype”.

After the announcement that white actors would no longer voice non-white characters on The Simpsons, creator Matt Groening said: “It was not my idea, but I’m fine with it. Who can be against diversity? So it’s great.

“However, I will just say that the actors were not hired to play specific characters. They were hired to do whatever characters we thought of. To me, the amazing thing is seeing all our brilliant actors who can do multiple voices, do multiple voices.”

What they didn't do is listen to the fans who are from those groups, Apu was loved by a majority or Indians - they didn't care about the voice actor they like the humor and that they showed them as a normal fallible person even if it was a bit absurd at times. The arranged Marriage episode was considered ground breaking in those communities because while he went through with it in the end it implied he had a choice in it etc.

The white women who run woke revolutions are never interested in what any of the minorities they claim to be defending have to say. They're only interested in the social status they gain from leading the latest incarnation of the Ladies' Temperance Movement.

Do you think it's funny or sad that people were saying that the Simpsons had outstayed its welcome 20 years ago?
There was a period in the early Y2K era where it was the unfunniest shit on tv, with that tarded Nsync episode or the Phantom Menace parody where Bart and Skinner duel with pieces of shrimp.
This dude needs to let it go & retire. He's still the voice of Mr. Burns but he seems to be unable to do the voice correctly anymore.

This is like when Always Sunny went mainstream and started using Taylor Swift and other current pop songs in the background of their newly sharp 4k widescreen episodes. Feels like something from an alternate timeline.

If they couldn't tell the difference, why bother doing it? Shearer could have continued voicing the character under a pseudonym, Jawan Daquavious or something. Nobody would ever know. Jawan might even get an Emmy.

Internet faggots keep telling me that Simpsons is good again and that "even a bad Simpsons episode is better than a good episode of anything else!" Even if that were true (which I don't believe,) I still wouldn't want to watch the Simpsons again. To me, the Simpsons represented a special time in my life when I grew to adulthood and hung out with my friends in the college student lounge watching Simpson episodes after dinner. It was a time of fun, independence, and relaxation without the burdens or cares of adulthood. Watching the Simpsons today would be like visiting an aging relative that I hadn't seen in awhile. "My God.... when did you get so....old?"

I haven't watched a Simpsons episode in years but I went and checked Marge's voice after someone in here talked about it and my god, same with Mr. Burns. Truly sad to see a once brilliant show just ran into the ground for decades at this point.
Seasons 1-7 were peak Simpsons
Seasons 8-11 a noticeable dropoff but still some quality stuff
I think it was season 12 where I quit watching regularly and would watch an episode here and there.

I tried watching every season one time after season 13 to season 31 or 32ish a few years ago. I don't remember shit that happen in them right after watching them. It's the strangest thing! About only episode I kinda remember had a raping duck and Mr Burns in. It was the shittest thing ever made by man! Here's a clip, so at least I know it wasn't a fever dream:

where's the joke? Elon really is the new Trump
Remember when they made an episode where they praised Elon Musk as the science messiah and he was the guest star? No? Fair enough, it was already long into the show's zombie years... and now probably that same amount of time has passed again but this time it's trendy to hate rocket man! My point is The Simpsons hasn't had anything original to say that isn't just toeing the current year line in over 15 years.

lol shut the fuck up Harry. It wasn’t that long ago, you were waving the pom Pom’s in support of this asinine decision. How DARE actors ya know…act! If the character is a black, autistic disabled trabsbian in a wheelchair and not voiced by someone fitting those exact descriptions, it’s racism and anyone who speaks out against it is a goose stepping Nazi! Remember touting that, and now you’re only complaining because the pushback is taking away a handful of your millions of sheckles you duplicitous kike. You’re absolutely shameless.

And to hop on when the show stopped being funny, it was at least watchable up to about season 13 and everything after that was just garbage. Futurama was only good for its first four seasons, aside from a handful of episodes the Comedy Central era sucked and Family Guy was never funny.

On the other side these two episodes was better than "Homer vs dignity" and "the Boys of Bummer".

Mr. Burns actually had nigger servers 🤣

Jesus that is awful.
Mr. Burns now sounds like Homer trying to do his "raspy old man" voice while trying to sound like Mr. Burns.

Another example of a nigga taking a hard working white man's job. The white man do everything, get the show popular and all and then this nigga comes along and complains. I didn't see no Indians coming up asking for Abu's voice, nah, cause he no doctor, hell if Apu had been a doctor there would have been a hundred of Indians come running. If the doctor had been a trash collector my bet no nigga would come asking for the job.

If the show wanna get real, then show the Doctor being single and his kid being raised by the baby momma.

I don't like it when I'm reminded that The Simpsons is still airing new episodes, nevermind the garbage state it's in. Last time I was unfortunate enough to watch a bit of a newer episode, Julie Kravner literally sounded like she was dying, and that was like ten years ago. Just put the dog down already.

It's honestly a travesty, because classic Simpsons is legitimately one of the greatest television shows ever, but that's less than a third of its total episode catalog, so most people just know it for being long-running and "not as good" (serious understatement) as it used to be.
