People love their cars, oil companies love cars, car companies love cars. Those three opponents are enough for me to say that outright banning cars is a bad bad idea. Somewhat easier (still incredibly difficult) is to start reversing the pedestrian-hostile world and turning it into a car-hostile one (in places like cities, not rural areas where cars will remain necessary to an extent). So instead of banning cars, turn parking lots into parks, make larger and larger areas of city centers motorvehicle-free zones, increase the availability of services and so on.

The thing about "banning cars from city centers" has been tried in various forms. In the late 20th century, many cities did try variations on that, including creating pedestrian-only streets. Problem is they neither addressed root causes of why the city center was failing, didn't create any reason why someone would visit downtown, and didn't benefit the people who lived and worked downtown.

Yeah, funny you should mention "cooked", you sometimes hear about Tesla batteries exploding, the last thing I want is a Chinese car made of explodium that will be an electric fire that firefighters can't easily put out, nor rescue me because the "jaws of life" are built for standard-weight, standard-frame cars.

As for Jason, the whole idea of hating cars involves "muh transit alternatives" and "muh streets for kids", and electric cars don't really do a lot in those instances.
