When people get drunk enough, their brain literally stops recording into memory what is happening beyond the immediate moment. Think of like a computer with temporary RAM which gets deleted, then long term memory, being drunk enough means everything stays in RAM and is not permanently saved beyond a few seconds. This is why people black out. Nick reading the chat literally doesn't get recorded in his mind, so then he sees the chat and thinks he needs to read it over and over. Pure immediate instinct.

It is sort of like the "How would you feel if you didn't eat breakfast this morning" thing.

It sounds like he has some sort of electronic bell he can ring from his studio. He said that "they were going to be mad" at him, or something to that effect. Presumably it will wake someone up in the house. So there is a buzzer in his studio that he can ring for some reason?
