I think you're actually looking at separate groups and mistaking them as one continuous group. The vast majority of people who went WN/etc. in the alt-right period either remained there or simply moved to a less extreme version of the same idea. The AF group is a separate, newer set of young people, and their transition to Orthodoxy (to whatever extent that's happening) is the result of the same semi-deradicalization of sorts that you saw the young WN crowd go through. It's just a consequence of growing more mature. This topic should probably have its own thread, honestly. There's a lot of discussion about this kind of thing that happens sporadically between threads like this one and the TRS one.

I recognize that during the decade-long span a lot of the new blood came in, especially during that AF period. I've seen it in person: you'll meet guys in their early 20s who use all of the lingo of the anti-sjw-to=alt-right era imageboard culture (as it's all spread out to xitter and discord), but have no memory of anything before 2018 and have never posted on an imageboard.

When I say "reactionary youth culture", I mean a sub-cultural tradition rather than specific individuals. If by semi-deradicalization you mean that Jews are no longer the axis mundi around which their entire universe revolves, I'll agree. A lot of them still believe all of the same things about race etc. that they did before (though they do tend to question some of these later on), but it's just recontextualized that it's not as important anymore—there's no urgency to create an earthly eutopia through Eugenics or whatever.

The atheistic WN phase was the worst and darkest one, bar-none. It's no wonder that it was among the easiest ones to capture people through sexual blackmail—all that terminal blackpill anxiety had to be channeled somewhere, and for a lot of guys that was straight into the libido (easily manipulated through homo and ephebophile propaganda of the kind that the AF sphere and WN predecessors put out). If you want to know what I mean, and how the left and right share sex weirdo handlers, search the name "traea" on this very website or watch this now-deleted Weekly Sweat stream (especially the part with "Cosmo").

A lot of people will tell you it started in 2014 with gamergate, but—and this is more of an intuition—I'd argue that it started even earlier on /mlp/; none of you are ready for that conversation, though.

They had to contend with Current Year something like three years before it even deployed: the hardcore social engineering hits autists and their art communities before anyone else (and especially in the MLP community). They were "peaked" (in kiwi lingo) on trannies in 2012 or something due to Purple Tinker, who has a thread here.

If you were really to get to the root of the origins of the contemporary reactionary youth culture (probably just "culture" now), it'd be the conflict between people who censor themselves internally but demand validation externally, and people who are honest internally but willing to hide their powerlevel externally when it's appropriate (not just when it's necessary). That's the spirit that anon culture cultivated, /mlp/ epitomized, and whose cultural output and ethos have snowballed—permeating the authentic thought and language of the decade since.

Think about it: pick any random semi-influential lefty trannoid who's old enough to have been around back at the root of the madness—you probably just thought of someone involved with MLP in 2011. Why would it be different for the other side? Something to chew on. Might be a stretch, but it feels true and is a fun idea. It was real in my mind.

I have absolutely no source for this and I don't want to come off at all as an expert on this topic BUT I've heard getting permanent damage from this sort of thing is actually far rarer than you'd think. Apparently the asshole is quite resilient and will go back to normal (or kinda normal) even after quite extreme... errr... stretching.

But again I am no expert I promise.
