Paper Mario wasn't a very popular series compared to the rest of the Mario line up. Nintendo fanboys talk about it a lot but it didn't sell any where near the numbers other Mario games did. Mario isn't a very good RPG character so you need the built in Nintendo audience or a naive parent buying for a child.

An apple made to look like an orange is still not as bad as an apple made to look like being an orange and being told isn't it isn't an apple. Nintendo is a company that tries to use nostalgia and charm to continuously milk its consumer base and this time probably isn't any different for them.

Western localizers are kind of on thin ice right now so any pointless change they introduce tends to get a lot of push back.
