Because he probably was the one who did it. He told April to get out before today, he gave her a reason to be out of the house, he's been in contact with her parents and lied about it, and now his lawyer is texting his private details about the charges live on the air.

I may be wrong about the mandatory minimum though. Looking at it it seems to only apply to first degree drug possession. So the cops would need to find 100 grams of nose sugar.

Without the guns though, 5th degree possession carries 5 years. The guns are aggravation to the felony.
