Give Randazza credit. It’s a healthy approach to booze. I’m kind of like him. After my back injury I couldn’t drink for a few weeks due to the painkillers. I stopped the painkillers but just completely lost interest in alcohol afterwards. If I have 2 drinks a year in some social setting it’s a lot.

What happens to the kids is usually a trip to the police station, where you sit and wait for a social worker. If it’s night, or the weekend, you can wait many hours. Cops are nice, but busy. She finally shows up, you are interrogated while she waits for a foster family who can accept whatever number of kids it is. If they can’t find one within a reasonable time frame, you get split up. It’s no contact with your siblings or parents for at least a week usually. You sit on a bed in a strange place where you are not known. And you have the clothes on your back.

It’s fucking terrifying and you learn what it is to be truly
alone in the world. Its not something you ever unlearn.
May they at least have each other. I went alone, and stayed alone thereafter.

Allow me to add, as someone who worked overseeing foster kids, assuming a family memember isn't available, some states have shelters that exist for temporary stays for kids waiting for foster care. I know it is rare, but I know for a fact Idaho has two, and Utah has at least one. These allow for at least some siblings to be kept together (due to age restrictions).

The main issue with foster care though (at least in cases where kids were taken from their parents), is that, depending on the case, the state would much rather try and work towards reuniting the family. In my tenure working for the state, I saw this happen several times, each time it would end badly (can't go into details sadly for legal reasons). Drug use/addiction is a very common one where the state will try and reunite the family though, as they see it as a carrot to dangle infront of the parents to try and keep them clean. So far I have not seen it work though. Seeing this day in and day out killed my soul. And that, my fellow kiwis, is why I no longer work for the state, or mental health field.
