Some jails will give benzos to folks in active withdrawal. It is not uncommon for physically dependent drunks to end up in jail, and a headache if they have a fatal DT seizure.

In my home county a few years back, a detoxing drunk died. There was a lawsuit, and the county responded by being rather generous with anti-detox meds. Of course, lots of folks in booking started claiming they were in detox, hoping to score some valium.

Yes - I've been one for years now and it's not some sort of special status. It just means you can get in trouble for not reporting certain things. Anyone could call the police and say they were a mandatory reporter.

Also, I don't know how it works in MN but in my state, unless there was an imminent danger, I almost never call the police directly. There are various online and phone reporting systems (both with the state and with your employer) to make filing a report relatively hassle free. I could file a report in less time than it takes to post this. Lots of 'mandatory reports' are nonsense CYA issues and the systems are designed to let you file a report and them deal with whether it's worth pursing.

So yeah, just calling the police and saying you're a mandatory reporter doesn't mean it couldn't just be some random person.
