Honestly, Vivian being a tranny doesn’t bother me as much as the MANY instances of censorship in the remake.

While Vivian wasn’t trans in the original Japanese, she was still a “queer” character of some kind (trap, femboy, otonoko, etc.)

A lot of people have noted the stupidity of getting rid of the “catcalling Goombas”, but there is WAY more censorship than that. Every instance of a character being called “crazy” or “nuts” has been removed because that’s offensive to… lunatics? Multiple scenes have been changed to cut “fat-shaming”. A genuinely funny joke about Luigi dressing in drag and terrifying a Bob-omb has been censored.

I haven’t played the remake, and I refuse to. These are just the changes I have heard of so far.

Is there a comprehensive list of those changes and where they happen? I know the catcalling instance you're talking about and the drag one but I don't recognize the others.

Treehouse went full propaganda with it. I believe they took out all the instances of 'gendered language' (people referring to each other as boys or girls). Also, from what I've seen, they got rid of the suggestion that the HAL9000 expy fell in love with Peach after he saw her nude tits in the shower.

Of course they're doing this to appeal to maybe the 1% of the population who actually share their views

I would've bought it, had they left the script completely alone. I have very fond memories of playing this game, the original Paper Mario and Super Paper Mario as a kid and teenager.

But yeah, Nintendo of America and their bullshit have certainly lost me as a customer

The only thing that I'll defend about this game is how expressive the NPCs are, but even that felt half-assed.

It's mostly just them being complacent than outright incompetence, since they can always fix shit with the occasional patch.

I'm more pissed that Nintendo keeps charging full price for these half baked remakes with no bells and whistles than anything. If it was a discount title, like hey here's an old game we slapped a new coat of paint on, I probably would have paid $50 for it even with the dialogue changes. However, this is a full priced $80+tax (Canada) title and it's a 20 year old game with some graphical updates that runs at a lower framerate than the original, and the only thing they changed was updating dialogue to be more acceptable in the current year and added a couple of mini bosses. I guess if you never played the original back in the day, it's not so bad, but like from my perspective as an old fart who did, I don't understand what I'm paying $80 for. I had the same issue with Link's Awakening and the Wii U rereleases.

If the prices are killing you, then relax for a bit and give it 5 years. Come 2030, they'll still be $80, but the value of the Canadian dollar will be so low it's like you're only paying $40.
