TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

And ironically, it’s the idiots on Twitter who have the most trouble separating him from the character.
Well those guys probably followed the #ChangeTheChannel producers, and many of those people didn’t really do a character, just an online persona of “normal person, but with amplified personality traits”.

Came across this randomly on YouTube.

Haven’t watched it, nor do I plan to, but I recognize the glasses guy’s avatar from Twitter. He’s essentially a smug douche who huffs his own farts while making a bunch of random claims he can’t prove, and when people call him out on it, he either claims he never said it or mocks people for not understanding what he was saying.

So I’m confident in saying these people are probably ones who believe the CtC documents 100% and think Doug is evil Nazi Hitler man or something.

I wish Doug was what the CtC crew made him out to be, the idea of Doug being a violent sociopathic chess wizard toying with people and putting them against each other for his amusement, while simultaneously being the most incompetent person in the world, who doesn't know anything and throwing tantrums over his Halloween costume being ripped is genuinely the funniest possible situation, and god damn it, I'm pissed it's not the case.

In a way, it’s actually funnier that people are convinced that what he is while Doug is just a kinda cringe but friendly dude. It’s like those 90’s movies where some regular Joe Shmoe gets mistaken as a super cool secret agent man or crazed supervillain by an organization and hijinks ensue.

I mean, considering how all the CtC people have essentially faceplanted themselves into being mocked or flat out irrelevancy while Doug just keeps happily walking along doing his thing, that’s pretty funny too.

Wasn’t that basically how Doug portrayed the Critic in the anniversary specials?

Despite doing the caustic critic schtick, I've never seen Doug being malicious. It's endearing on its own and I guess there's no resentment there so he has no problems chugging on with whatever meager career he has.
It's interesting how public perception can shift over time, especially in the context of online personalities. People tend to become more forgiving when someone demonstrates consistency, humility, and the ability to laugh at themselves. In the case of Doug, his ability to handle criticism and maintain a steady course likely helped him weather negative attention. Unlike those who exploit their fanbases or react poorly to criticism, Doug's self-awareness and resilience made his "cringe" moments more endearing.

In contrast, when individuals like Linkara react defensively to criticism, it often amplifies negative perceptions and makes it harder for them to regain public favor. The way people handle criticism and their interactions with their audience play a crucial role in shaping their long-term reputation. As the landscape of online personalities evolves, those who maintain authenticity and a level-headed approach often find themselves viewed more positively in the long run, even if they initially faced backlash.

Doug has endured, I think, partly because he enjoys doing NC. It isn't want he wants to be known for, nor what he wants to be doing for the rest of his life, but despite the fact he wants to do greater things and is resentful that he can't seem to succeed at such he still enjoys doing NC.

Doug also keeps his head down. He never enters the wider discourse. He makes his jokes, gives his opinion, is a bit cringe, and moves onto the next project whistling along as he tries desperately to be slower than the rate that new movies age into being nostalgic.

Many serial killers display lolcowish behavior like this, like Varg Vikernes having nerd rageout on Twitter over blacks in Lord of the Rings or that one guy whos name I forgot who, when asked why he left his victim's bike on the crime scene (thus giving investigators a lead) replied that stealing is wrong.
