Sigh. I've never understood arcs like this. It wasn't that long ago that Nick was regarded as a "man of the people". He seemed "high" (not in the drug sense) on life and was more than willing to criticize and perform takedowns of grifters, truly malicious actors, and the occasional village idiot. He became a darling of the conservative con circuit and positioned himself as the point of the spear in trying to get Vic some MUCH needed redress. We were content in knowing that, if Nick turned his attentions to you, it was for extremely good reasons and assuredly involved a wrong that needed to be made right.

So, what happened? How did Nick lose his status as a nexus of common sense, decency, and fairness, to the unrecognizable husk of the man he is now? I still think Vic's absurd court losses changed Nick in dark ways and created a schism between he and Ty Beard, but it wouldn't explain the current depth of degeneracy.

And for those who maintain that Nick was always like this and destined to end-up in a ditch somewhere, I just can't believe that. Maybe I'M being the village idiot, but I remember when Nick's career was firing on all cylinders. To have everything just disintegrate in a scant three or four years is beyond disheartening, especially when you factor in his five kids.

If even half the stuff alleged by Styx's supposed litany of ex mail order brides in his thread are true then he is sitting on a degenerate stash as bad as rekeita's and just as much an alchie. He would probably deal with the situation even worse than nick and that is really saying something after nick's comments tonight, like "killed by cops serving the warrant" type of bad.

It really is incredible that Dick has dodged anything close to this for as long as he has knowing the kind of company he openly brags about keeping when you think about it. Those totally random sprained ankles or grandmas birthday parties keeping him from hanging with Ralph must have saved him from

The point is the drugs and alcohol are second order symptoms to the fact that Nick is fundamentally a selfish, irresponsible asshole. It's one thing to live alone and pursue your habit in denial, it's quite another for the police to have to raid your white collar crack den to check on your 4 children and think 'wow people on the Internet are so judgmental'. Nick isn't so much imprisoned by his addictions as feels entitled to them - its the same attitude he has towards respect, people's attention and sex. Drugs or no drugs, this is apparently who he really is, all they've done is amplify the chip on his shoulder. His whole life philosophy seems to be "I deserve this, and if you disagree, well, I'm a chill, laid back guy, so I'll magnanimously accept that's your opinion but you're so fucking wrong, you stuck-up pleb".
