People underestimate how young children are affected by shit like this. This will quite literally affect every social interaction for them moving forward, because parents serve as the model for both men and women as a whole. The 16 year old must be suffering, but he experienced a loving mother and father for the first few years of his life. The younger children may never have that. They can get over it, but it takes a lot of work.
Keep in mind all of this was caused by a father who was presumably a loving, law-abiding, Christian father. His children will know he chose drugs and sex over them.

I am 200 pages behind but wanted to quote this. You see this a lot even with divorce and younger children, where the children blame themselves for the divorce, where the kid goes 'if only i didn't cry as much, if I was quieter, then mommy and daddy wouldn't fight.' Imagine how much fucking worse it is when instead of something 'minor' like divorce, it turns into your parents going to prison for drugs, where suddenly your parents love drugs more than you. I don't know if it has been revealed yet who was behind the required reporter thing, but the fact that it happened (relatively) quickly into the drug abuse is the best outcome for the kids. I have seen similar things happen where the kids grow up their entire lives, or close to it, in a home where drug abuse is rampant. The fact that the kids hopefully weren't in that longer than a year or so hopefully won't scar them too badly.
