Nick's simply skilled (or was) at leading people to believe he's "fundamentally a good person." One of the most fundamental things about being a good person is valuing the welfare of children and animals. He's allegedly failed on the first one and he's bragged about failing on the second one.

Last year he was making wisecracks about how the Make-a-Wish foundation sucks because all they do is provide for sick and dying children, and only changed his tune when he found out how the surrounding family benefits instead.

I said this many months ago. It's absolutely true that people who rejoice in the undo suffering of animals are twisted beyond repair.

This is coming from me, someone who hunts, someone who needs to kill animals for protection of live stock, someone who raises what they eat. @Null said it best, there are pest animals I understand. @AnOminous brought up a good point too. It's even in the Old Testament, I can not remember the verse but it's basically that God commands us to only slaughter an animal with a sharp unchiped blade.
