There is a reason why Marx stopped writing Das Kapital and just put it under the rug until he died for Engels and Bernstein to finish it, it's because the labor theory of value is nonsense and not a basis for measuring exploitation for workers. It is an outdated theory that was obliterated with the introduction of Marginal Theory and the Subjective Theory of Value which more accurately described how value works and what it means for those who labor. The sort of exploitation described by Marx is only maximalized in systems that try to force a LTV to be the basis for value because Crisis theory, shrinking markets, etc can only happen in a system that bases itself on the Labor Theory of Value and the Tendency for the Rate of Profit to Fall. This was not as much the case when systems correctly understood value is subjective. This is why Ford could increase wages and lower productive hours, lower the price of the good he was selling, and actually make a larger profit in doing so.

The soviet union went through economic collapse because a planned economy obfuscates the price signals necessary for producers to know where to prioritize or distribute their goods, it also promoted or dissuaded goods not based on market forced but vague ideals of "just price" or "proletarian values" which created further malincentives for producers. This general trend lead to a grossly byzantinian economic system where nothing could actually be calculated and it was all thrown in the air as vague numbers not representing the actual reality. This is the Socialist Economic Calculation problem. Liberalization policies were just final straw put on a tower so unsustainable a breath of wind would destroy it. The Socialist Economic Calculation problem is also the very same reason Nazi economy was in shambles by 1939; the obfuscation of market forces made production less efficient while redirecting resources to sectors focused solely on war which lead to shortages and inflation hidden only through monetary tricks like MEFO bills but the gravy train ran out and they had to start a war.

And no Chile's Cybersyn couldn't have fixed that either. A quantum computer with an AI in it couldn't solve the economic calculation problem Socialism falls itself into.

If there is anything to be learned from the collapse of the USSR, it is if you have an authoritarian government do not implement political liberalization and economic reform that may or may not backfire at the same time. Compare and contrast Gorbachev's USSR with Xiaoping's PRC. The Soviet Union had plenty of other issues besides that that usually had to do with its Communist nature of course but the changes to the country from the top down put the nail in the coffin.

Western Capitalism ultimately had nothing to do with it. The Chernobyl disaster alone showed that a main failure point was the government dictating truth to the point that legitimate problems were suppressed and hidden from people responsible for making decisions on things affected by the problem. Also because the Bolsheviks positioned themselves as representatives/decision makers of communal resource pools - which made them effectively filthy rich as they would use those resource pools for their whims instead of for the intended purpose of the state and the people.

They're sending campaign surrogates to the front of a court house where they are trying their political opposition (I'd argue with the intention of affecting the outcome). The Soviet Union liberalized too slowly and too quickly. The writing was on the wall in the late 70s and, had they started making the pivot then, the USSR might still be around today at least in a bastardized form. Instead, they tried as hard as they could to cling to the Old Ways And Powers until they were being literally held at tank-barrel-point, then they jumped into liberalism with both feet and broke their ankles. They needed to make the changes they made, but it had to be a slow shift to avoid the terminal system shock they ended up experiencing.

China saw the writing on the wall and purged the hardcore Maoists in the 70s (iirc) and managed to liberalize juuuuust enough to skate by, though probably not enough to secure eternal existence. That might just be a problem inherent to China, though. Sina delenda est.
