I think the .22 talk is a distraction. Nick is enough of a fag to have 'art' using .22 rounds. I think the bigger issue is the AR and iirc extra mags under the bed. Was a round in the chamber of the AR? It's quite common to keep a underbed gun for protection but not a good idea when you are high on booze and cocaine. I also question the need to have extra mags just free floating around. Better to have them in a known place to make them easier to grab and less chance of mag issues.

If this were anyone other than such an insufferable prick, I would feel bad for him. I've seen where this road he's on ends, and if he doesn't want to steer off, it's death. You cannot keep doing this forever without that inevitable ending. While I think his kids probably have that deep down resentment for him, as they now how to live with the shame that their neglectful father acts this way, they also want him to get better because you have that unconditional love for your family, no matter what. It's a really terrible place to in, their kids. They are the real victims here, no one else, only them. They only deserve sympathy here, despite what some on the internet want to claim.

It's not about being totally helpless. Washing clothes, bed clothes and towels for 5 people means doing multiple loads of laundry a day. Even assuming there was plenty of "heat and eat" food on hand, someone needed to ensure all of the children were getting fed and that the dishwasher was being run a couple of times a day.

The 16 year old is a full-time student outside the home, so the only opportunity he had to run a household was outside of school hours. Him knowing what to do doesn't stop it being an overwhelming load when combined with his studies. Nick found running the kids around to their activities stressful, ffs.

Personally I think it's stupid to have a key lock or rotary combo lock on a bedroom gun. If you want to secure it, go with either biometric safe or quick-combo safe. But I think of a bedroom gun as a home defense weapon, not a vanity toy.

The unsecured gun is a red herring. It's perfectly fine to leave unsecured weapons around children, so long as the children are trained on how to safely handle a firearm. I got my first gun at 10 years old. A 20 gauge shotgun I would go everywhere with. I must have genocided thousands of squirrels on my family's property. Totally unsupervised. No one ever got hurt. No property was ever damaged. Completely safe.

As for shooting raccoons, .223 is probably appropriate. It is commonly referred to as a "varmint round," and no it won't explode a raccoon, and is generally not used for deer hunting. 22LR on a raccoon would likely result in wounding and prolonged and painful death without excellent shot placement (though I guess Nick may not be averse to that). And if you're shooting at raccoons, you're aiming at a downward angle (or up into trees I guess), so bullet travel isn't too much of an issue (and if you're shooting up into a tree from right underneath it, a falling bullet will only reach terminal velocity and isn't all that dangerous. It would depend on how far he was from the tree, as a falling bullet at a shallow angle will still maintain most of its lateral velocity).

That being said, I'd guess his neighbors weren't too pleased with him magdumping into the trees. .223/5.56 is pretty loud comparatively speaking.
