Not Just Bikes / r/fuckcars / Urbanists / New Urbanism / Car-Free / Anti-Car - People and grifters who hate personal transport, freedom, cars, roads, suburbs, and are obsessed with city planning and urban design

Of course their cope is probably "you're stuck in traffic!". They will do anything to cope that a bicycle is somehow more convenient than a car even if they have to ride their bike through the snow or being drenched in rain. Does not matter if it's 100 degree weather and they smell like a hobo's asshole from sweat. They will still say without a shred of irony that biking is better and to just suck it up.
Even when I'm stuck in traffic (which doesn't happen often- and even if it does happen the traffic quickly resolves itself) at least I can sit in a comfy chair, with AC set to a pleasant temperature even if it's 35C outside; and the best part is that thanks to ACC the car drives itself. I don't mind traffic.

maybe urbanists can explain how you're supposed to have this non-carbrained hobby in a two-room shitparment.
You can always get an N-Gauge layout, but those things are fiddly as owt and it's still around £200 for a starter set.

If Jason wanted a liberal government he could always, I dunno, go back to his own fucking country?
if the F150 looked more like this I don't think it'd attract so much ire (or buyers)

I think the F-150 would look nice as a sedan myself.

I'm amused every time they mention planes.

I wonder if they've ever gone to their bike shop only to be told "We don't have that in stock, but we can get it tomorrow." and then they said "Sure".

I'll give them a hint, it didn't come in on a train.

And I know they don't care about any city with less than 1 million people, but many places without passenger service still have freight.

Jetstream-Ameriflight-340BF-1.9-1-Production-Rez-2850x1500-JPG80-1024x539.jpgCaravan.jpg

Ameriflight is one of the feeder companies for UPS.

Today the smaller feeders fly out of the local 'big' airport and do multi-stop trips around the area dropping off packages. Then they typically stop at the aircraft's home base and then a few hours later reverse their journey to pick up outgoing stuff.

Fun fact: Before next day shipping was popular the feeder freight carriers had another primary purpose. They'd pick up checks from each small town and bring them to the bank processing center in the big cities.

I almost forgot, this is a check:

One of them got banned /r/Libertarian for brigading them with the meme.
Even the "left-libertarians" who populate that sub can't stand the urbanists:

Honestly, as far as lefty memes go, this one ain't too bad. While unoriginal and uninspired, it is short, punchy, and some of it is even accurate. If this was a middle schoolers satire project I would give them a solid B-, good job r/fuckcars poster! 🏆

Speaking of the "cars are so expensive" studies aren't they usually a bit fucky? MMM (good job on getting divorced lol) estimates are probably a bit closer to reality (as you can eyeball this shit, a new car shouldn't explode in 5 years, and costs $40k, so $80 for ten years for the vehicle + gas, etc, $125k isn't terribly off). But you can be way way below that if you're a poor, and poors often are. Poors also don't track things as accurately so it's hard to estimate exactly.

Over the same period the average cell phone costs $114 a mo, or $14k over ten years. Is a car 10x as useful as a phone? probably.

How's everyone liking their Ferraris?
If you're going to factor in imaginary numbers like "social costs", I've got some very bad news for black people.

I'm amused every time they mention planes.

I don't think any of them know how logistics work at all or where their stuff comes from.

Yeah, some stuff is darn near impossible to figure out (a lot of items, especially food, is obfuscated as part of trade secrets) but it's not hard to figure out where your local grocery distributor is from.

Hint: no matter what, it's in a huge warehouse with lots and lots of truck docks.

It might be hard to work out exactly where something in your hand came from, but it's not terribly hard to work out "in theory" what kind of logistics are needed once you stop to think about it. But they don't - they've outsourced thinking to China.

I don’t know of a country that codifies bikes running red lights. I know some cucked cities have turned stop signs into yield signs for bikes (which is what they argue they do and how everyone treats it anyway).
In the USA bikes are considered vehicles that need to obey all traffic laws, they just don't, since they are never policed and have no registration.
These neighborhoods aren't much louder than a normal suburban neighborhood because the only people flying are the residents and (rarely) their guests.
The small planes that fly put of these are barely louder than a car. They also see a lot lower traffic levels than you'd think, so you don't have planes taking off and landing constantly.
But you can be way way below that if you're a poor, and poors often are. Poors also don't track things as accurately so it's hard to estimate exactly.
Cars also let you do stuff like get paid to help other people. Getting paid 10 or 20 bucks for giving someone you work with a ride home adds up quick for negligible gas and time. Let's see you help someone move with a bike.

I think if more people knew about the basic logistics of how the world works it would change their whole world view and also blow their minds. I remember someone posting here about how fruit would get picked in South America, it would get shipped to a Southeast Asian country for processing and packaging, only to get shipped from there to Europe and the USA for consumption. What kind of fucked up corruption would it take for that to be financially viable?

The "Idaho stop" codifies that bikes are faggots and should be hated: https://legislature.idaho.gov/statutesrules/idstat/title49/t49ch7/sect49-720/ (a)
49-720. STOPPING — TURN AND STOP SIGNALS. (1) A person operating a bicycle, human-powered vehicle, or an electric-assisted bicycle approaching a stop sign shall slow down and, if required for safety, stop before entering the intersection. After slowing to a reasonable speed or stopping, the person shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle in the intersection or approaching on another highway so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard during the time the person is moving across or within the intersection or junction of highways, except that a person, after slowing to a reasonable speed and yielding the right-of-way, if required, may cautiously make a turn or proceed through the intersection without stopping.

Immediately after it makes it clear that it does turn red lights into stop signs, but doesn't let you run a red light without stopping:
A person operating a bicycle or human-powered vehicle approaching a steady red traffic control light shall stop before entering the intersection and shall yield to all other traffic. Once the person has yielded, he may proceed through the steady red light with caution. Provided however, that a person, after slowing to a reasonable speed and yielding the right-of-way, if required, may cautiously make a right-hand turn. A left-hand turn onto a one-way highway may be made on a red light after stopping and yielding to other traffic.

Cars also let you do stuff like get paid to help other people. Getting paid 10 or 20 bucks for giving someone you work with a ride home adds up quick for negligible gas and time. Let's see you help someone move with a bike.
This is huge for poorer people and it's easy to forget the time of "ass, grass, or gas, nobody rides for free". Even as an adult with a normal house you still can greatly reduce vehicle costs by knowing a few friends with different types.

Freddie deBoer just published a piece (a) talking about how the bikes in NYC, especially those of delivery drivers, are genuinely making the streets dangerous.

Be on the watch for r/fuckcars seething over this, despite him making every other concession in the world (like him saying we need public transit and the delivery drivers are discriminated against).

What the fuck is with this personality type?!?
Autism?

tbf using a Steam engine when mining coal is just smart business, gotta pump out water anyways, and you are digging up the fuel so no need to pay the petrostate tithes to deliver the stuff that makes you money.

If you don't care about stuff like 'air quality' that is xD
I've heard of that strategy before. Not to reveal too much about where I am, but there was a local industrialist around here who was into oil and natural gas. His entire home was lit using natural gas lamps because he refused to give money to the electric company when he has his own fuel source for basically free.

That's what someone said the Crown Vic/Town Car feels like to drive. Imagine driving the F-150 as a car.

/r/fuckcars plans to build a city:
I wholehearted encourage them to do this. I will even sign petitions and maybe contribute to them doing this, as it would be hilarious beyond believe.

These fuckers can't even be arsed to move to towns/cities that are already existing and walkable, because reasons, and they will make their own? Hilarious.

Every single major "planned development" new city built around something like this has failed or taken forever to take root in various hilarious ways, unless maybe mormons or other religious were involved.

It's certainly a great way to light a ball of cash on fire. Maybe they can go move to Ave Maria, Florida - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ave_Maria,_Florida - it says it's walkable! And we've mentioned Peachtree before - https://www.peachtree-city.org and their golf carts (but those are probably too car like!)

Yeah it's crazy how internet has changed the definition of community. It's not just a group of people, it's a group of people who actually help and support each other. Your discord buddies won't help you move or fix your broken dishwasher, they just exist to whinge and talk to.

There used to be a bunch of videos of bicycle couriers in NYC, who spent all day racing as fast as possible through traffic and sidewalks breaking every law along the way. The whole time barely dodging cars and pedestrians.

It's the easiest thing in the world to take over a small (less than 1000 people) town and basically do whatever you want and put your ideology in practice. Cults do it all the time.
That's what someone said the Crown Vic/Town Car feels like to drive. Imagine driving the F-150 as a car.
It was the last full framed vehicle available, plus it's wide spread use in law enforcement means there's still a lot available and parts are cheap.

Usually centrally planned communities fail because they forget the most important reason people live somewhere: employment. Without income generation making it viable, you just have a neighborhood that you commute to. You could even cut out the middle man and just have the factory pay you in factory money so you don't even need to go to the bank! Keep it all on site and never interact with those car brained retards again.

You'd think places like this would be the ultimate compromise, you have walking/bike/golf cart paths going everywhere. It was a fairly wealthy suburb of Atlanta, so you have all the benefits these idiots were looking for. Except it's still in the Southeast, so enjoy your 95 degree days out in the sun. It was basically a city built around the idea of golf course neighborhoods. Plenty of cart paths all over and cart path alleyways between streets and yards so you are kept fairly segregated from vehicle traffic. It felt like something you'd design in a video game. I haven't been there in a decade so I don't know what it's like now.

I like the fact that they think that "subscriber count" means "will be willing to give up their location to build a new city".

They don't realize that in most cases, the idea of the "urban life" requires a very mature urban center, and that small towns still function very much as they did pre-automobile, just with horse and buggy instead of car.

Nevermind the fact that these "self-made cities" by ideologues (neo-Wakanda, Troonblinka, etc.) end up being money sinks and grift ventures. If you wanted a truly car-free area the best you could hope for is something like Mackinac Island, Michigan which has a permanent population of less than 600 and is entirely a tourist resort.

That Redditard mentioned some pages back who said we can't imagine their genius is kidding themselves. They have a few pictures of Amsterdam as their model (which is hardly car-free) and anything else is out of the realm of reality. Its akin to a child thinking I'm the stupid one because I don't think an idea where people can fly and everything is made out of candy is very realistic.

Hilarious that they're fantasizing about living in a game about an agrarian lifestyle, but the whole point of their movement is they're supposed to be URBANists not ruralists. Wait until they realize, "Wait I have to bike 7 miles to get to town? Everything isn't within walking distance like my vidya games?"

Reddit Island part 2: Reddit city

"It would be worth in to borrow money to move there, in view of how much you would save by freeing yourself from car dependency".
:story: A fool and his money are soon parted. Wait till they realize they can't grow anything because farming isn't like a video game. It's going to become like the Tenacious Unicorn Ranch where they need to buy all their food from the nearby car dependent town in secret. Living off the grid is Hell. It would be hilarious if they're charging their e-bikes using a gas generator and producing as much carbon emissions as if they were driving.

You could totally replicate what they want for not that much money. You'd just have to hire a team to find an appropriate small town within (gasp) commuting distance of a real city, and then buy the damn town. Basically, you want something with the bare minimum, so a post office, grocery store or walmart, hardware store, what have you, the common core of a small town - finding one where everything is within four square miles, which should be totally possible. Buy up all the properties, get on the city council, and spend the money to route the highway around it, and ban cars within the city.

Here's the key to make it work - four square miles is two miles on a side, so the longest walk from a property inside is a mile, then you've hit an edge. You pave parking all around the edges, and people can still use their cars with just a simple mile walk - 15 minutes or less.

Then you begin redeveloping to take advantage of this. In a decade you have a wonderland.

(The above is actually possible if you have something like five thousand families willing to do it, or half a billion dollars. You may have to make some exceptions to the no-cars rules for scheduled deliveries and medical care, but it could be made to work. It's not likely to happen because people don't give enough of a damn, but if someone finds me half a billion I'll try it.)

Living off the grid is Hell.
There's a lot you can do to reduce your reliance on society but do you really think these fucks would even consider reducing their food bill by killing and eating wild game?

The closest thing to that is people in cities getting into raising a few chickens for fun, but without any real knowledge of animal husbandry, like think they're doing chickens a favor by letting them roam around the yard and not realize that doing such a thing is an invitation for stray cats, hawks, foxes, and other wild animals to enjoy a nice chicken dinner at your expense.
