Rekieta, on the other hand, was an utter failure as a lawyer. Couldn't get a client to save his life. Managed to scrape up a tiny number of cases, most of which he did pro bono because that was the only way he could get any court time at all. Obviously, the tiny number of interactions he had with judges would stick in his mind because they were so few and far between. Nonetheless, he made sure to trot them all out as stories for the suckers who bought his larp. But if he hadn't been the biggest screw up in the county in the whole of Judge Fischer's career, I'm sure he wouldn't be on her radar at all. Life is too short for busy people to be worrying about insignificant bullshit.

Given that the other guy seems to run the local drug court, chances are that it would have ended up on his list eventually anyway. Certainly, if Rekieta is going to go after some plea arrangement or diversion from custody programme, that's where you'd expect it to end up.

Of course, that's how I'd expect a normal, rational person to proceed under these circumstances. Having watched Rekeita vs Montagraph though, perhaps Nick will slug it out with a not guilty plea to the bitter end? But what do I know? I don't have a big brained Constitutional Law scholar whispering in my ear, telling me what I should do. But if I was in Rekieta's shoes, I'd be in rehab already -- whether I believed I was addicted to cocaine and alcohol or not. Courts are looking for a way to let the middle class white guys free -- not send them away to be buttfucked by Jamal. Nick's job at this point is to provide that judge with reasons to set him free -- not to provide him with reasons to pack him off to jug.

But Rekieta's got the ODD. He can't help himself. He might end up doing six months in jail despite the judge's desperate desire to let him go free.

He might have paid 80 grand for them. That doesn't mean they have a resale value of 80 grand. I'd be surprised if they have any resale value at all -- perhaps a nominal $1000 at most. There's a reason why you can't find the work of most contemporary artists on the open market -- sales of their work is generally tightly controlled through dealers and galleries. This is because if people knew how little the work is worth once they've cut a cheque for it, they'd never buy art again.
