To answer your question directly, republicans deliberately manufactured abortion outrage as a replacement wedge issue for segregation in the late 70s. Prior to this abortion was relegated to a “catholic issue” and evangelicals and non-catholic conservatives didn’t really give a shit about it and in many cases, supported it. Politico has pretty comprehensive article about this.

TL;DR evangelical institutions were in danger of losing tax exempt status if they didn’t desegregate but it was no longer politcally viable for them to rally against directly against desegregation; Republicans decided to rally support against “government intrusion” by manufacturing outrage over the relatively recent Roe decision. Sort of how like no one in the political right had ever heard of or cared about “critical race theory” until Fox News convinced them it would turn their children into Black Panthers and genocide all the whites.

The exact point of where life begins is just part of that manufactured outrage. It’s a question without an answer so it’s the perfect distraction from the more important issue of people’s right to control their own bodies. I don’t care whether a fetus is a clump of cells, looks like person, has a heartbeat, can feel pain, is potentially viable outside of the womb, or is currently composing the Great American Novel. If it’s attached to my body I get to decide if I still want it in there or not.

It's very possible, they aren't the only ones dedicated to "adopting" and birthing genetically defective, rejected embryos and believe they are "saving" them.

Re: the history of its opposition. One of the seminal books referenced by Alito during the overturning of Roe was one by Joseph R. Dellapenna, written in 2006. It's very long - 1300 pages - and states that abortion bans have always been in place and no one ever supported it. You'll find a few articles talking about it here and there, but it's considered one of the seminal books on the issue. It's over $200 on Amazon. Very pricey. In 2008 he wrote a law article on how women who leave their home states to seek the procedure should be held by the laws of said home state. So you can thank him for these horror stories of women getting shamed for seeking a medical procedure elsewhere.

Intentionally adopting and implanting embryos with serious anomalies is the human version of SMASHED and SLAMMED dogs intentionally bred to be so deformed they only live 2-3 years.

Without knowing where and when the embryos were created, we can’t know if testing was likely or not. Testing wasn’t super common until fairly recently, and plenty of “snowflake” adopters will try their luck with embryos created 10-15+ years ago. To test older embryos they’d have to be thawed, tested, and refrozen while waiting for results. That would damage many of them, and most patients and clinics probably wouldn't take that risk, especially if they know the mother was young (20s-mid 30s) when the embryos were created. Unfortunately, some embryos look textbook perfect under the microscope but have genetic anomalies that present as failure to implant, miscarriage, or a more tragic outcome like Abel’s.

I have a strong suspicion that's why the family members dipped with Abel. She chose to adopt abnormal embryos, refused to abort the one with lethal anomalies, and on top of that once it was born demanded life-saving measures. It's basically the human version of breeding exotic bullies and similarly fucked up animals.

Every step of the process, she chose to bring a kid into the world that died within a year of birth and never left the NICU. On top of that, she uses the kid to grift. All while using her selfish choices to shame women who chose to abort their nonviable fetuses and support abortion bans including for lethal anomalies. I don't think I'd want contact with a family member like that either.
