i saw the movie once on tv like 15 years ago and i found it boring, all i remember from it is that it was about a dude who got horny for jailbait and in the end he dies.No offense, but I don’t think you understand American Beauty and the reason why Nick loves that film.
It’s not about the underage sex, it’s about freedom. Freedom from his stupid wife. Freedom from his five annoying kids.
Nick wants the freedom of cutting all that out of his life, and live the live he never got to have in his 20ies. Goofing, partying, doing drugs.
At some level he’s too scared of the price associated (alimony, child support, family cutting his trust fund, public perception, etc.)
So he admires Lester in the movie and dreams about doing it. And has to settle for isolating himself in his “office” while the kids starve, and get the wive to go along with the lovely April moving in and as his personal groupie/fleshlight.
so yeah i didn't really think about any deeper meanings or philosophies behind it. to me, nick rambling about the movie just means that he wants to fuck hot teens (which is pretty mundane as far as fetishes/kinks go) which he could have easily achieved without burning down his whole life like he did.
but i guess if he's actually in it for some kind of deep 'enlightened liberated hedonism' worldview, and he got his ego invested in that, then it does make sense why he would choose to publicly implode his existence like that.
