Prime Minister Narendra Modi has questioned his biological origins, asserting that he is “convinced” of being a godsend, introducing the idea of “immaculate conception” in the electoral arena as voting enters the final phases.
“Pehle jab tak maa zinda thi mujhe lagta tha shayad mujhe biologically janm diya gaya hai. Maa ke jaane ke baad, een saare anubhavon ko mai jod kar dekhta hoon toh mai convince ho chukka hoon ki parmatma ne mujhe bheja hai (Till my mother was alive, I had the impression that perhaps my birth was a biological one. After her demise when I view after assimilating all the experiences, I am convinced that God has sent me),” Modi is heard saying in an interview to News 18 last week.
A portion of the interview has been going viral since Tuesday evening. Modi, 74, was responding to a question on the source of his energy.
In the interview, Modi sought to indicate that the kind of energy he embodies couldn’t have come from a “biological sharir” (biological body) and that God has imparted him with “urja” (energy) because the Almighty wants to get some job done by him, the chosen one.
“Main kuch nahi hoon ek instrument hoon, jo ishwar ne mere roop me mujhse lena tai kiya hai aur isliye main jab bhi kuch karta hoon to manta hoon ishwar mujhse karwana chahta hai (I am nothing, only an instrument through which God has decided to achieve and so whenever I do something I believe that God wants to get it done),” he added.
He said he considered 140 crore countrymen as God and worshipped them since he himself was unable to see God.
Modi spoke about it again on Wednesday in an interview with Hindi news channel News 24. “…Possibly, God only has sent me for some work, for some purpose. And, for the achievement of the purpose, he gives direction, education, ability, energy, inspiration…. Call it ‘daivya shakti’ (divine power) or “ishwariya shakti’ (godly power); all this is not possible without it …,” he said while replying to a similar question on his indomitable energy.
Congress media in-charge Jairam Ramesh termed Modi’s claim an “unprecedented level of delusion and arrogance”, adding that it was a sign of impending defeat.
“The outgoing Prime Minister seems to think he is God. This is an unprecedented level of delusion and arrogance,” Ramesh said in a post on X, attaching the video of the Prime Minister’s interview and BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra’s remark that Lord Jagganath was a devotee of Modi.
Ramesh said the remark by Patra, the BJP candidate from Puri, was not a slip of the tongue but “out of blind devotion to a self-deluded person”.

He had looked unbeatable heading into the election, backed by one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and the fulfillment of key promises appealing to India’s Hindu majority, including the building of a temple on the site where a 500-year-old mosque had been torn down.
Yet more than 20 opposition parties, spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi, formed a united front in a bid to stop Modi’s once-dominant electoral machine. A mixture of regional and caste-based groups, the alliance focused on appealing to voters who felt left out of India’s growth story, which has been marked by growing inequality, pervasive joblessness, rising living costs and growing demand for welfare support.
Signs of trouble for Modi emerged after the first of seven rounds of voting. A dip in turnout triggered a broad get-out-the-vote effort that saw Modi adopt a more strident tone, firing up his Hindu nationalist base with divisive anti-Muslim rhetoric and attacks on the opposition’s welfare policies.
Modi had appealed to India’s 1.4 billion people with a combination of business-friendly policies, welfare measures for the poor and Hindu nationalist policies. He had pledged more of the same in his third term, vowing measures to create jobs while also replacing India’s religion-based marriage and inheritance laws with a uniform civil code — a measure that Muslims, Christians and other minorities oppose because it would prevent them from adhering to some faith-based laws.
Those more contentious proposals may now be off the table. The results also call into question whether Modi would have the political capital to implement contentious changes to land and labor laws, as well as a slew of other reform measures needed to achieve his goal of turning India into a developed nation by mid-century.
Even with a reduced mandate or a change in government, India’s growth trajectory should largely remain positive. Business leaders from Elon Musk to Jamie Dimon have hailed India’s potential as an alternative to China, with some economists projecting that the nation’s $3.5 trillion economy can become the largest contributor to global growth within the next five years.
“Political stability has been at the very core of both economic growth and investor sentiment over the last decade,” said Sumeet Abrol, a partner at business consultancy Grant Thornton Bharat. “The verdict of the world’s largest democracy will put decisive leadership to reforms to a test the markets haven’t seen in the last decade, leaving investor sentiment exposed to cautiousness and volatility in the near term.”

I like people who treat waiters with the same kindness as CEOs.
Unfortunately many Indians who make it to Australia aren't like this. Maybe it's selection bias; the wealthy can better afford to immigrate to Australia, but I haven't seen the same with other Asian immigrants.
Maybe it is due to cousin marriage? This journal says 55% of marriages are to cousins. It's hard to believe, as its the only non-Muslim country to have that issue.
