Darrell Hammond, the SNL actor, has a really great memoir called God, If You're Not Up There, I'm F*cked: Tales of Stand-Up, Saturday Night Live, and Other Mind-Altering Mayhem. In it he details how his childhood trauma at the hands of his mother shaped him and how he dealt/deals with it. In it he has the same matter-of-fact tone about these events that all adult trauma sufferers tend to have. Darrell Hammond is a literal comedian. Neither he nor they talk about these horrors as frequently, manipulatively or jovially as Boogie does.

I highly recommend his book. In it he shares how he completely blocked all recollection of his mother’s physical abuse until he was an adult and holding his newborn daughter as soon as she was born. Then the images started coming at him in vivid detail — shit like her stabbing a knife through his tongue when he was pre-K and her making him sit on the railroad tracks behind their house when the train was coming (then grabbing him off at the last second while the train driver was blaring the horn like crazy). Until then he thought he had a normal family; his parents were still happily married and he was in frequent contact with them and visited regularly. He only later learned from extended family that they had always been concerned by what they saw of her treatment of him. But as in many families, his injuries and his mother’s responsibility for them was not discussed.

These memories drove him into drug and alcohol addiction that rehab didn’t touch. He was only freed from it when he was diagnosed with trauma and treated in a trauma unit (which he has followed with daily 12 Step meetings and working the steps to this day). When he got out, he called his parents and told his mother privately that the doctors had put him on a trauma ward with people who had been raped or violently abused as kids. She calmly said “Never call this house again” and hung up. I won’t spoil what happened when he went to see her on her deathbed, but it’s pretty chilling and a memorable read all around.

When I was little, from 6-10yo, my family and I would go to the same grocery store every Sunday for the weeks shopping usually would go through the same cashiers line, her name is Heather. It was always nice to see her and my mom would spend a few mins catching up with her.
