UN Missing mother found dead inside 16-foot-long python after it swallowed her whole in Indonesia - The mother-of-four had gone missing Thursday night and failed to return home, forcing a search effort, village head Suardi Rosi told AFP.

A woman has been found dead inside the belly of a snake after it swallowed her whole in central Indonesia, a local official said Saturday, marking at least the fifth person to be devoured by a python in the country since 2017.

The husband of 45-year-old Farida and residents of Kalempang village in South Sulawesi province discovered her on Friday inside the reticulated python, which measured around five meters (16 feet).

The mother-of-four had gone missing Thursday night and failed to return home, forcing a search effort, village head Suardi Rosi told AFP.

Her husband "found her belongings... which made him suspicious. The villagers then searched the area. They soon spotted a python with a large belly," said Suardi.

"They agreed to cut open the python's stomach. As soon as they did, Farida's head was immediately visible."

Farida was found fully clothed inside the snake.

Graphic video published by TMZ appeared to show the snake being cut open in a wooded area while more footage posted by the Daily Mail appeared to show the woman's body being carried in a blanket past distressed villagers.

Other similar incidents in recent years

Reticulated pythons grab onto their prey with dozens of sharp curved teeth and then squeeze it to death before swallowing it whole. They are widespread in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia, and are known to eat monkeys, pigs and other mammals.

Reports of humans being killed by pythons are extremely rare but several people have died in Indonesia in recent years after being swallowed whole by pythons.

Last year, residents in Southeast Sulawesi's Tinanggea district killed an eight-meter python, which was found strangling and eating one of the farmers in a village.

In 2022, a woman in Indonesia's Jambi province was killed and swallowed whole by a python, the BBC reported, citing local media.

In 2018, a woman was found dead inside a seven-meter python in Southeast Sulawesi's Muna town. Officials said the victim, 54-year-old Wa Tiba, went missing while checking her vegetable garden near her village.

In 2017, a farmer in West Sulawesi went missing before being found eaten alive by a four-meter python at a palm oil plantation. A six-minute video obtained by CBS News showed villagers slicing open the python's carcass to reveal the legs and torso of the dead victim, named Akbar. Villagers said the victim was likely ambushed from behind.

"Reputation for being aggressive"

The reticulated python is the longest snake in the world, according to London's Natural History Museum. They are native to Southern Asia and can grow to be more than 20 feet long.

The longest reticulated python ever found in the wild was discovered in 1912, according to the museum, and was measured to be nearly 33 feet long – "more than half the length of a bowling lane and makes this snake longer than a giraffe is tall."

Zoo Atlanta, which houses reticulated pythons, says the snakes "have a reputation for being aggressive."

The snakes are occasionally kept as pets in the U.S.

Last year, a 14-foot-long reticulated python was found dead on side of the road on Long Island, prompting a search for its owner.

In 2022, a 16-foot albino reticulated python that slithered through a Texas neighborhood for months was finally rescued and returned to its owner.

So 15 feet is their max size normally? I thought Burmese pythons could reach up to around 19 foot or so, but that's if they are in captivity and are feed extremely well.
They can but it’s pretty unusual I think.

The Burmese python is one of the largest snakes in the world. Adult Burmese pythons caught in Florida average between 1.8 m (6 ft) and 2.7 m (9 ft); the largest Burmese captured in Florida measured over 5.4 m (18 ft) in length.

I could see a 16ft snake being able to kill a person but it shocks me it could eat the same person. I mean just a 4-5 snake has amazing strength when it constricts I couldn't imagine a snake that's 16foot constricting around my waist or something, it would make it impossible to breath. But its shocking to me that a humans wide hips could be eaten by a snake, how big of a head did this thing have? And I guess how small was the woman. Also to eat 4 kids after a adult woman is a bit much
This lady must have been small.
Constrictors tend to eat head-first, and the usual problem when it comes to people is the size of the shoulders in relation to the head/neck.
This is extremely rare.

Yea I was thinking a pet snake that was fed pinky rabbits and didn't have to worry about where its net meal was. I am pretty sure they can reach up to around 22 foot in extremely rare cases but normally they max out around 9-12 foot. I do remember seeing one at our local Alligator Adventure that was a absolute beast a few years ago.

Yea I figure she was small and the snake was obviously large, to get a humans damn shoulders in must have been a feat. I'm more shocked it wasn't fucking exhausted and overfull after eating a adult woman that it could possibly fit in 4 children afterwards, I would hate to have to pass that lol. You would think eating from foot to head would be easier when it comes to humans since it would give it a chance to stretch more?

It probably took hours.
I'm just amazed by places like India where they have a thriving tech economy but also have triple digit losses to predators. It's a culture so at odds with itself that there are people working in 21st century office spaces miles away from where triple-digit/yearly paleolithic levels of human predation is occuring, Wild.

Of for sure, it probably took awhile for the lady to die and from memory after a snake kills its prey doesn't it normally reposition itself before it starts swallowing? It seems like someone could have walked onto this scene and stopped it before it was completed in the time that would have been needed. And yes India is strange so many people die to wild animals in a modern country, is it just the poor areas are like 3rd world countries and the richer areas are fairly modern? I don't know a lot about the country but it is a very strange place

I suppose the one good thing is that she probably died pretty quickly. She would’ve passed out from lack of blood and oxygen and her heart would stop soon after. Constrictors wait until the heart has stopped to begin eating.

Snakes preying on Muslims? There's a cannibalism joke in there somewhere.

True....but irrelevant, considering this happened in Indonesia.
Yeah India and Indonesia are both tropical third world shit holes with reticulated pythons and tigers and shit and are in the same general part of the world. Why would any ever compare the two?

So you don't think it took awhile to die or at least if it did she was unconscious? Atleast there is that

Well I was talking to the person who mentioned India since I quoted his message. Thats the only reason it was mentioned

I’ll quote a previous post because it’s accurate. It’s kind of a myth constrictors kill by suffocation. They basically kill by heart attack and they can feel the heart stop so she was almost certainly dead by the time it even started to swallow.
Ackhtually, pythons kill through constriction, they coil around you and put enough pressure to impede blood circulation, causing cardiac arrest because the blood isn't circulating properly and the heart isn't strong enough to keep going. In most cases you are asleep in less then a minute almost painlessly because you lose consciousness through lack of blood circulation in the brain. The same way you do a blood choke in MMA and the guy passes out after 7 seconds.

Wasn't there a guy a couple of years ago who put on a bunch of safety gear and tried to get himself swallowed by a giant snake. I think he chickened out pretty quickly when he felt the snake squishing him.

Or was that just a fever dream?

Oh wow thats pretty cool, but it makes sense. I know she was dead by the time it started to swallow her, I just wondered how long it took to die but I guess according to that she died quick and fairly painlessly so there's that I guess.

Thats either true or a good urban rumor or whatever they are called. I remember hearing about the same thing

It's not clear to me from the article, was the snake dead when they found it? Or was it just in a lazy stupor after eating that poor woman.

Yes. There was a whole Discovery special on it, it was a massive disappointment. All the ads highlighted a guy getting eaten by a snake.

So what are you supposed to do if you find yourself getting constricted by a giant snake?
Pass out and get eaten. There’s not an awful lot you could do unless you were lucky enough to be holding a knife and were able to get a few good stabs and slashes in. They’re pure muscle, and they’re incredibly strong. Average Indonesian lady is very petite, she probably weighs less than 45-50kg, she would have stood no chance.
Poor lady. There was one a while back where it’s eaten a croc and got split open or something?

On another note, what would be the best thing to do if you walked outside and saw a big snake trying to kill someone?
Detergent has a pretty awful taste and triggers gag reflex for them, maybe putting it in their mouth is easier than trying to fight off the snake

Edit: clove oil and alcohol seem to have a similar effect. Ive seen these used to make snakes regurgitate their tails when they try to eat themselves

Yup, heard the same about alcohol. Any hard booze makes them puke. little teetotalers!

So what are you supposed to do if you find yourself getting constricted by a giant snake?
Just say no. Snakes can't eat you without your consent.
Serious answer, I guess stab it if you have a knife and a free arm. A big snake is as strong as a big man but severing the spine somewhere or causing massive blood loss would give you a fighting chance.
