Civvie 11 - Retro FPS Boomer

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who got his ass kicked by Descent 1 back in the day.

Still love it, though. Damn thing blew my fucking mind when it came out. Although I'll agree with Civvie: Descent 2 is overall a better, more polished and more balanced game.
I remember having it on PC when I was like 7. Probably gave me traume from in-game timers. Weird how no one ever speaks about it, probably because usual 3D shooters were good enough

I wonder if it's a case where people got filtered by sheer vertigo. I remember a few publications at the time making a big deal of their reviewers getting acute motion sickness from it. That probably discouraged a good few people from playing.

I found it uniquely sickening as someone who was born, raised, molded by 3D shooters. Loved the atmosphere and music. The briefing music and first level are burned into my brain. Had no idea the game became so brutally difficult.

I must have been extremely lucky, because I never felt vertigo or motion sickness playing Descent (or Overload and the other modern takes on the genre, for that matter). I did get extremely lost sometimes back in the day, even with the automap.

I mean, you can scream "shill" all you want, but when yer on youtube and being able to make connections with gamin studios, you wanna keep the bed clean as possible, since you can get games faster and rack up the view numbers more, which is like the #1 thing at the moment for any youtuber in the gamin space.
Produce shit in order to be able to produce more shit isn't what you're trying to say I reckon, yet somehow you managed to convey precsely that idea.

I've never had any kind of motion sickness or anything from games, but I tried out Descent 1+2 in what looks to be the same source port as what Civvie used in the vid, and I bounced off in like 2 minutes flat.

The games control really horribly, but I can't explain why. I figure it must be because I've played enough 6DOF games that came out long after Descent that my expectations have been anchored to more modern stuff, but just something about Descent made it feel really vile to play compared to something like Neon XSZ

You have to wrangle a ship with simulated inertia instead of just having a ship shaped avatar that reacts immediately to what you're doing. On top of the ship having noticeable acceleration and deceleration, a full 360° horizontal spin takes a couple of seconds to execute and vertical turning is even slower. Modern games don't really do this outside of simulations and give you much more reactive controls.

Civvie does mention tweaking the rotational speed to be more responsive. Considering the game was 100% made with a joystick in mind, the capped turning speed makes sense. But if you're playing with a modern rig or just a mouse uncapping it doesn't feel like a bit deal.

Fresh video:

I played Blade Runner way after the fact and enjoyed it but found the game glitchy and buggy. Could have been a side effect of issues with more modern hardware as well as the novel semi-randomised playthrough stuff. Vaguely reminds me of Discworld: Noir now that I think of it.
Disregard that I'm retarded and it's from 4 years ago lol. Thanks YouTube suggestion algo!

Anyone else getting tired of every indie FPS sucking Civvie's dick?

On the flip side, Selaco is a great fucking FPS. I LOVED it. It is Dusk-tier.

Also, don't be turned off by the fact that it's in EA. There's a ton of shit to do. The campaign took me 10 hours to complete on the hardest difficulty. I'm sure on the lower difficulties it would take about 8 hours.

He promotes their games and they're probably in contact outside of things. I don't like people blowing him but at the same time if a YouTuber can make your indie game popular for the right reasons and you like him, why not throw an easter egg in? I've said before the only stuff I dislike is when it starts to feel vaguely incestuous like with the New Blood guys but I've heard from people directly connected to them that aside from the faggot Syzmaki and the owner, everyone there is quite nice and good to work with.

Oh, it does look good indeed, but i will still pirate it only because i don't want to give my money to anyone Troonworld-adjacent, same goes for stuff like Fallen Aces and Supplice.
