I am curious what other threads this has happened in?

Take for example any thread involving or about Android Raptor. She will show up and spout off her usual rants about how the bible belt fundies are taking away her lesbian abortions. She gets trashed in the replies as people remind her for the 8 billionth time of all the obvious flaws in her argument, but there will always be a small contingent of lurkers, always the same few people, that vote top hats on every person who disagrees with her. And naturally it's women and atheists who have a bone to pick with anyone that has a penis or a bible in their possession.

To be fair, I've noted the same phenomenon with several other cliques on the site. When I torment Catholics or Mormons, there is usually just one person who will actually debate me, but a very dedicated crowd of lurkers backing that one person up by slapping trash cans and top hats all over the thread. It seems that certain long time users of this site have just earned their own "gay entourage" that follows them around looking for fights to pick.

My honest perspective is that certain users are allowed to get away with this as long as their "True and Honest" bill has been paid for the month.

It's just inevitable that any internet community will develop autistic cliques of individuals that are obsessed with a certain thing or certain individual, without fail. Even "anonymous" sites like the various -chans and the sharty end up developing these autistic cliques in off-site platforms like discord. And these cliques will eventually fight with random outsiders who gain their ire, or other cliques with opposing opinions.
We still have yet to lose our tribal monkey genes, they're still present in our brains, firing neurons like a chimpanzee being given pieces of banana to press buttons.

The only thing that needs to be changed is that the two hugbox threads (one of which never asked to be a hugbox) need to have their hugbox rules removed.
