2016 US Presidential Election Thread 2 - Always Darkest before Don

The problem is that they've been coasting on electing the first black president for 8 years now.

I liked Obama ca. 2008, but a huge part of the surge for his election was that he was promising to clean up Washington. To "drain the swamp", to borrow a Trumpism. But he did nothing to do that (even things within his power like dialing down the surveillance state) and, in fact, doubled down on Washington corruption with bills like Obamacare. The "first X president" means very little when you're seeing your livelihood drain away while your supposed advocates in government fight over culture war bullshit instead of taking their corporate masters to task for fucking the populace.

Too many democrats (including a few people ITT who keep stumping for Hillary) keep thinking that people will vote for Democrats forever because they're the only party who pays lip service to our issues rather than recognize that people are smart enough, in general, to realize when they're being pandered to over having their issues addressed. I know a worrying amount of middle-of-the-road, lifelong Democrat voters who are voting Stein or Trump because they're pissed that Democrats have done nothing for 30+ years to help them. The same, frankly, is happening with blue-collar Republicans and their party establishment.

My biggest hope out of this election is that both parties seriously rethink their positions on key issues like healthcare, foreign policy and political corruption however this election turns out, but I bet they'll continue sucking corporate cock for a few more years until the voting masses start busting out guillotines to deal with their leadership.

As with Null's post, I agree.

I think many of the things Trump has said are wrong but, to his credit, he has also hit the nail on the head many times too. As far as poor people in the inner cities and other working people go, the Democrats have written them off as "free, secured votes" for years--decades even. Democrats have done fuckall for those constituents since Reagan took office (at least). That's 35 years of sitting around doing nothing except coming around hat in hand every few years looking for votes--and I am saying that as a person who is far more to the left than to the right.

I don't think it would be unwise of these people who have been ignored by the Democrats to signal their disapproval by voting for Trump or one of the third parties in protest to Democratic inaction. Perhaps if they do that the Democrats might pay them a little more mind when they have elections ahead and need accomplishments to speak of at campaign rallies.

The Democrats have become entirely too comfortable with complacency and figure they can coast forever. They can't. When--or if--they realize that, they might fare better in the elections. Clinton was thrown a softball with Trump because he is constantly mire in one controversy or another and still she is having exceptional difficulty with him. If the Democrats do not fundamentally change how they handle things they will continue to suffer beatings in the elections--and while many of their useful idiots have been foretelling the "demise" of the GOP, smarter observers will note that the Republicans have actually begun to really thrash Democrats.

As I mentioned during a debate with one of my classmates, Trump is giving a voice to people spat upon by both parties. These people aren't gonna go away. They'll keep voting populist until someone actually listens to their concerns. I'm a middle class white collar dude, I don't have to worry about people coming in and taking my job. Therefore I'm okay with more immigrants (in theory at least) however the guy who works as a riveter or fitter, janitor or laborer doesn't have that same luxury. He has to fight tooth and nail so his job stays over here. Start listening to their concerns and maybe they'll listen right back.

He's giving a voice to exceptional individuals? ;)

The funniest thing to me is how these blue collar working class people genuinely thinks that a narcissistic billionaire who literally lives in a gilded tower on 5th Avenue genuinely cares about them.

While I understand that sentiment, these people have been ignored for a very long time, of course they'll gravitate towards a candidate who's even paying them lip service and attention. Even if that candidate doesn't give a shit about them.

He's more likely to do it than either party's leadership. Republicans have been paying lip service to the issues of white working class voters for decades now, and Democrats have completely written them off as worthless bigoted rednecks. Trump is basically a brick through the window of both parties this year and both Democrats and Republicans are kidding themselves acting like this is simply Tea Partiers being retarded again.

Well, that's understandable that they'll latch on to someone who panders to them.

That's how a hefty portion of Hillary's support is explained. She says a few great things to them, tells them how she'll do stuff for them and then once she's in, it is (or will be) "later guys!"

Her entire public and private position dichotomy fits right into this. If she wasn't pandering, she wouldn't need two positions.

The only good that might come from this farce of an election is the first of the nails in the coffin of the Mainstream Media.

theyve come out as blantant shills for one side without even a shred of pretend integrity and it shows. The average joe blow on the street has lost faith in the MSM and this is a good thing. We need a less central and less easily controlled/bought out/whatever type of media that remembers what its role in society is.

Without a free and unbiased media democracy just can't happen.

The distrust is motivating people--at least the ones that are willing to face the facts of the bias--to look for and compile information on their own or to at least vet it better, and that is a good thing.

Unfortunately, the most likely outcome will be a dwindling election participation from the population.
