I love this post. This utter lack of compassion and human decency defines the Left. It is edgelording at its finest. It's practically vintage. Do we support programs to help them educate themselves? Try to taper off dying industries little by little instead of leaving millions in poverty with no hope? Expand opportunities in rural areas where there is a lot of room and valuable resources?

Perspective and personal beliefs make all the difference, but I wouldn't ascribe apathy to plight as being something inherent in the Left.

Why exactly should the rest of us prop up a lifestyle that is doomed? Automation and foreign competition are here and they aren't going away. Service and tech are the future, heavy industry and farming jobs just aren't needed in large numbers anymore. The only way forwards is to adapt, not hopelessly cling to a dying model.

My favorite thing to do is to play devil's advocate, so I'll play devil's advocate against myself. What if I am completely and totally wrong and Trump won't even break 200 delegates. What happens? We reaffirm that there is no fixing this country and it is doomed to be whored out to corporate interests forever. There will never be an opportunity to put an outsider into office, there will never be criminal charges for the Washington elite, and there will never be an America renewed.

I don't think the populist left or right are going away anytime soon. Except in 2020 we might be dealing with an actual commie versus an actual reactionary if this pressure doesn't get released.

As the world gets more technological and complex, the bar to earning a living just got higher. It doesn't make economic sense to push a button for $15/hour anymore.

The solution to this is education. You cannot start your life on a high school education anymore, a larger investment on one's own part is required. STEM degrees, and trades for those better with their hands. These two solutions mean everyone is capable of thriving in the new economy.

It's better for people to have jobs than perpetual welfare checks given that idle minds can get nefarious quickly.
If people have jobs to get to, they're less likely to be out murdering people or tagging walls--they've got to get to sleep to get to work tomorrow.

The safety net isn't a bad idea to have around for the immediate aftermath of someone being down on their luck, but putting them back on their feet in an expeditious manner should be something strived for, as it has more promising prospects for everyone.

Allow me to play devils advocate here for a sec, it'd be really dangerous for a democracy to slam a candidate with criminal charges this close to an election. So why not let the voters decide if the want to punish the candidate or not.

To shield an individual from legal consequences of their crimes because they are engaged in the political process is the single biggest threat to democracy we face.
