Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

If a restaurant has no paper menus and requires you to download their app or look at their mobile site while I'm sitting right there in the place, then I'll just not go there, and eat somewhere else.
Sometimes I like to just not bring my phone with me when I go places. Not an unreasonable thing to do I think.
These are both great things to do if you value your privacy.

Various little hints point to those "retailer apps" being data harvesting vectors (if it's not proven already). You have to check in at the store = location privileges. You get to browse online = they track every single tap, every scroll, every item you look at, how long you look at an item, etc. = personalized advertising data. Why would I ever give a retailer access to that? Also, I feel like many apps are user-hostile. Lots of dark patterns that lead you to agree to things you don't want to agree to, e.g. contact and location access. The interfaces are just plain garbage, useful items buried inside of crappy menus as if built by contrarians. Apps suck, and the dumbest part is that many apps boil down to being wrappers for web interfaces. We have web browsers for a reason, yet these companies probably spend 6 figures+ on dumbass apps that are basically fancy browser shortcuts because the average person can't take 15 seconds to open the browser and type a .com address.

There's a classic ad targeting story where Target sent some girl ads/coupons for baby stuff before she even knew she was pregnant. IIRC it got her in trouble with her parents too, because she was underage. If Target's ad science was that "good" 10+ years ago, with just that girl's purchase history and some demographic data, imagine what ad companies/retailers are able to do with your data now that they have thousands more data points.

I don't think I need to explain why leaving your phone at home is a good idea. Just look at any court case involving cell phone location data, whether it's GPS or tower pings or WiFi association or whatever. What else can you expect when you carry around a box full of radios?

Anyway, I could go on for a long time about privacy issues. I'll stop before it becomes a full-blown rant.

I specifically hate how Microshit does this. Nowadays in Windows you will never ever get a useful error message out of ANYTHING. Even the most fucking severe failures - BSODs - absolutely refuse to give you any useful information. Instead they give you a fucking frowny face and "OOPSIE OH NO your computer has run into a problem!!" No you kike nigger retard motherfucker, in 90% of cases it's your shitty operating system that has a problem, not the PC.
I am absolutely 100% convinced this retard speak language is a deliberate psyop to make users feel like they are not in charge of their own computers, so that they're conditioned to accept advertisements, privacy violations, forced updates and other anti-features easier and I'm ready to blow a fuse every time I'm stuck debugging any kind of obscure problem while having this shitty fucking platform literally laugh in my face.

I miss when things didn't depend on an app on your phone. It's gotten to the point where certain retail stores' employees will not help you with anything, even getting something out of lockup, unless you "check in" using their mobile app. Some restaurants no longer have paper menus, and instead want you to use your phone to go to either their "menu app" or their mobile site (I finally ran into one of these) - some places are even worse and put ads in these.

I purposely keep my phone as bare bones and minimal as I can possibly get away with, and when places tell me I cannot receive any kind of customer service unless I download their app, then I can simply live without it. If a restaurant has no paper menus and requires you to download their app or look at their mobile site while I'm sitting right there in the place, then I'll just not go there, and eat somewhere else. It's really not a big deal. These are just two examples, but you get my point I think.

Sometimes I like to just not bring my phone with me when I go places. Not an unreasonable thing to do I think.
Totally a tracking/data steal/shady stuff going on.

Esp when some shitty app wants to get your notifications, location, access to your storage, etc.

EDIT: Beaten to it, but I really hate apps that REQUIRE you to share location and data. FAQQU FAGGOT

a deliberate psyop to make users feel like they are not in charge of their own computers
Just like the typical "smartphone" of Current Year? I guess the average "normie" nowadays who is used to the crap of the "smartphone" wouldn't know what to do with an 8-bit "microcomputer" with BASIC as the OS. Or a DOS system. They may even struggle with Windows 98.

And being used to how computers were before Current Year, I remember when having spyware and adware was seen as being just as bad as having viruses. Or at least I see it that way. I do not like my personal system being hijacked by advertisements and spyware as if it's not mine. Looks like that attitude is not a thing among "normies" now.

Yes indeed. The corporate push to change the interface of the average PC to match that designed for niggers poking a 6" touch screen with greasy sausage thumbs as closely as possible isn't lost on me. First came the lazy and overdone flat tile design, then they began calling programs "apps", then Winblows 10 was released with its shitty revamp of control panels, settings and all similar UI that now has shit you commonly need randomly strewn all about and visual design elements ripped straight out of iOS/Android, and is feature-incomplete so you still need to dig deep into the old menus occasionally or pay someone $100 to do it for you in a week's time if you're a nigger. Now win11 comes with shit like even more incompletely redesigned menus and a centered taskbar, because even on a 16:9 or wider screen you must still be reminded that you are a nigger and are supposed to be using a vertical screen instead. (Which would actually be kind of based but the vertical screens the pajeets at Microshit have in mind are smartphone screens, not the narrower 4:3 or anything NORMAL like that.)

My mom has been using windows for over 20 years, doing simple daily tasks like checking email, online shopping, some basic word editing and printing. There was a point when she was completely self sufficient and able to do everything she needed without help because shit just worked. Now I'm getting fairly regular calls from her needing help because windows is giving her trouble, like spamming her with ads that she can't even tell for certain are ads, fiercely pushing her to upgrade to winshit 11 when she was still on 10, random emails about her mandated microsoft account that she shouldn't even have to care about, and more shit I wouldn't even have thought possible.

My family is full of Apple cultists in the harshest possible sense of the term, and the last non-Apple piece of hardware remaining among them is my mom's windows laptop. At this point I seriously think the next time she needs to upgrade her laptop, I'll no longer recommend she stays on windows, and just let my appleb siblings deal with it and teach her how to use MacOS. If nothing else at least Apple has a bit more decorum while treating its users like retards.

I miss when it was normal to go out without some electronic tracking device on almost 24-7, which I still do.

Yes indeed.
Using a "smartphone" is annoying to me. Feels like I can barely get anything done the "smartphone" way.

And speaking of IT, I learned how to code in BASIC, even though that was already "outdated" by then. Years later, I was in a computer lab where I overheard some people from India talking in thick accents about something to do with "application libraries", and that's when it really became clear to me that professional programming doesn't work the way it used to in the late 20th century. And this wasn't even in Current Year. Now there's the "AI" craze, new software "apps" always having the "watered down smartphone feel", all the mandatory internet connection BS, and the apparent BS trend of new software being bloated and buggy along with incompetent feel.

That kind of news story should have been enough to scare the somewhat-privacy conscious folks, but I'm guessing it hasn't, as this kind of marketing pull has only grown.

They really have no reason to reverse course either, as I think for every one person that does what some of us do here - install a custom de-Googled rom on your phone, run adblockers on everything, only use FOSS software, etc, there's thousands of people who just use the default user experience for everything, so what do they care that they're not getting your data specifically? They're getting thousands of other people's for every one of you.

Also, Target is one of the most garbage woke retail stores there is. Lol. Look at their models on the walls now - I swear some of them look like land-whale burn victims.

You get to browse online = they track every single tap, every scroll, every item you look at, how long you look at an item, etc. = personalized advertising data.
Here's another hint - if you use Proton Mail, it can detect when third parties are trying to use track that email, like in some sort of cooperation with the party emailing you. Salesforce comes up a lot. I realize Salesforce is a legitimate software, but something I noticed, and I hate Salesforce with a passion.

Also, yeah, these retail store apps ask for way more permissions than should be necessary to do the basic things, so by nature I don't trust them, which is why I don't use them. If a store demands I use it just to buy something while I'm already in the store, then I'll just leave and not come back. I don't like that shit.

I know certain custom roms on Android allow this, but maybe just rooting your phone does too, but the specific permissions you can grant or revoke from apps increases - allowing you to revoke any internet connectivity, etc. Stock Android experience did not allow me to revoke an app from internet connectivity on a stock Pixel, but LineageOS with Magisk root did.

I have to do this for Doubletwist, a music player on Android because I have tried every single FOSS music player I could find on F-Droid, and in my opinion, they all suck. I hate that I have to use this one closed application to simply have a good competently made music player on my phone, but I'll keep waiting for a good replacement.

I miss when things didn't depend on an app on your phone.
Which is a really bad idea: if the program "app" can't be replaced if lost or if the 'net goes down, or you lose your "smartphone", the thing that needs the "app" to work can't be used. Bad idea if you don't want everyone to "live" as renting-only serfs, that is.

Also at least a couple of restaurants near me still use printed and laminated menus that they keep.

Let's ignore Yasuke for a minute, let's ignore the actual history and say yeah fuck it, he WAS a Samurai, he WAS celebrated and respected and he WAS on equal footing with people in Japan, just like everything Ubisoft and everyone else claims.
WHY HIP HOP?
Hiphop wasn't even fucking "invented" until the 1970s, yet Shadows take place in 1579.
Why does every video game trailer use some form of hip-hop nowadays? Is it supposed to be catchy?

While I agree with your point, I do want to clear up that it's not a Trailer, it's Gameplay, it's official ingame music you'll hear while playing as Black Samurai in Japan circa 1579.
Anyway continue on, excuse my autism.

To keep the thread on topic, I miss DVDs
I mean sure we still have them but with the way physical media is going, we won't have it anymore in the near future.
But even ignoring that, I still prefer DVDs simply put for how easy they are to use on Computers.
I remember buying a Blu-Ray of Deadpool it was cheaper than the DVD version
So I got it, and thought I'd watch it on my Laptop which has Blu-Ray support, thinking finally I'll see all the Benefits I get from Blu-ray.
Turns out you need some fucking Certification Key to watch them, even though I had the physical disc, a movie player that supported Blu-Ray and a Blu-ray drive.
I couldn't, and still haven't figured out how to play them on my Computers.
After that I stopped buying Blu-Ray, at least the Movies/Shows that had a DVD counterpart, which sadly a lot of things don't now, certainly not the ones I'm into.
I'm lucky I have a PS3 but fuck when that kicks the bucket I don't know what I will do as I like not only owning my media, but preserving them too.

Tl;dr
Blu-ray sucks dick cause im too dumb to make it work on my pc

You can't run an adblocker on cable.
This is not true. They'll just sue you into oblivion if you try to improve the end-user experience rather than the sponsor-adwhore experience, where the real money is made in cable.

figure out how to move the buttons around on the website to make you happier
I wish companies would stop lying about justifying UI and UX developers existence. Not saying programs and websites don't need updated interfaces as times change, but there's far too much "change for the sake of change" or "change for the sake of dark patterns" going on at the moment.

I would respect American tech companies more if they just came out and were honest about the business plan: "give us all your data and the maximum amount of recurring monies for the minimal amount of development effort, product feature-set, customer support or service; while we also double-dip by also selling space/time to advertisers as we all try to reinvent the idea of 'cable'; and then triple-dip by selling the user data to giant brokers trying to create a 1984 hellscape cyberdystopia."

I'm sure though it'd be more like "Oopsie whoopies, the code monkeys broke some of the core functionality making an improvement. We need all your data-wata to do the needful moving forward. Please click 'Allow' to enable us to maximize your user happiness score (though if you click 'Deny' we'll just ignore that selection since we know better than you at what you really want) as we turbo-charge your dopamine-overloaded brain-sludge!"

Fuck the infantalization of the user. I may be retarded, but I'm not a complete idiot.

*legally. i was trying to say you cant get it on physical media legally, but nothing is stopping you from burning one yourself. on that note my contribution is that i fucking hate that physical keyboards on mobile devices arent a thing anymore, i tried to type that message on my phone but the stupid touchscreen keyboard is too fucking small and i hate it. now im at an actual pc but holy fuck i miss physical keys on mobile devices.

Unfortunately, they're pieces of shit. The performance is very lackluster, the fans are loud and the machines aren't very "solid." That is, they break pretty easily. Maybe their second-gen stuff will be better, but I wasn't impressed at all with the first-gen stuff.

Work related Password expiry. It actively harms security and is just a nuisance.
My current employer requires sixteen-character local workstation passwords, with numbers, mixed case letters and special symbols. "Muh password manager" people, welp, too bad since that's on your fucking workstation. That's fixable by keeping your password manager on your phone or another system though, assuming company policy permits that, of course.

As you said, it's pointless. It just makes passwords weaker.

Nah it definitely started with win8
Maybe I've posted about this on KF before, but it's a fun story as to how that came to pass.
Up through Windows 7, control panels all looked like this:
Q-Dir_x64_SkhX2dkz3u.png

These are built with the old Windows MFC (Microsoft Foundational Classes) C/C++ interfaces. They've been around since basically Windows 3.x, having been dragged along kicking and screaming into the 32-bit world. Admittedly they have some serious shortcomings -- they've never been ported to 64-bit (so anything using these interfaces must run on the "Windows-on-Windows" (WOW) mechanism), they don't support high-DPI displays (so you get that fun "blurry" look to older applications when you run them on 1080p or higher resolutions).

Even before this current problem arose, MS had an existing problem even as recently as Windows XP: a lot of the knowledgeable people who wrote MFC (or at least used it) had long since left the company, and there was a real deficit of people who could still work with it. There were plenty of places where code for each dialog box was just copy-pasted verbatim to add another control (checkbox, dropdown, whatever) because the dev didn't know how to do it "right". It was getting ugly and unmaintainable.

"There Must Be a Better Way!" thought the brilliant engineers at Microsoft. Several "Better Ways" were developed, including WinForms, WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), UWP (Universal Windows Platform) and others. Being the products of brilliant Microsoft engineers, none of these Better Ways were feature-complete, backwards-compatible or even cross-compatible mechanisms for building user interfaces. As you can imagine from the names, there was all sorts of feature creep -- WinForms was generally intended for UIs, while "Universal Windows Platform" includes all sorts of shit to mimic Java's "write once run nowhere" functionality to let programs target UWP, which then runs on multiple Windows-only systems (Xbox, PC, Windows tablets, etc.).

As for how the modern Windows 11 control panels evolved to be such dogshit, so the story goes (from an insider at Microsoft)... the higher-ups were deciding how they wanted the updated Windows control panels to look. Obviously they had to be reimplemented basically from scratch using the newer toolkits since the old MFC stuff had to go away. So these brilliant managers and directors -- having no clue how to develop software or design an effective UI -- made mockups of their ideas in plain ol' Powerpoint.

This would have been okay (since this would just convey the "gist" of it to graphic and UX designers who would refine it and make it user-friendly and functional, right?) except that the management decided to mandate "this is how it needs to look ... EXACTLY like this, no changes, no twists, just make it look EXACTLY LIKE THIS!" In comes the army of loyal pajeets, who dutifully recreated those panels exactly how their overlords directed, and that led to the abomination that is the modern-day Windows control panel UI.

Just one problem. There's a lot of old-school dialogs in Windows. Many of them hooked into deep, dark places under the hood in the Windows kernel or at least inside services or the nasty-ass registry. There were also hard deadlines. So not only did the pajeets always (often) know how to make their fancy (ugly) new UI elements actually effect the changes they were supposed to when used, they were under intense time pressure to get as much done as possible in the time they had.

The end result? Windows 8 shipped with that horrific blend of old-style dialogs and a handful of "new," bland and dreadful looking "modern" control panel UIs. With each subsequent release of Windows, including the semi-annual major releases, they've slowly been patching out the old panels with newly-implemented modern ones. This means they've pissed away more than a decade of engineering time trying to phase out these fucking things, and they're still nowhere near finished.

And even when they do finish with those things, they've still got this MDI-based monstrosity "pattern" to do away with:
mmc_Y73vxNyXDh.png

Event Viewer, Hyper-V Manager and at least a few other core components still use this barbaric pattern, and are in desperate need of overhauls, but I weep when I think about what the higher-ups and their pajeet army will do to these old dogs.

the ones that arent spelled correctly really add to the kino
Fun fact: the misspelled ones are more effective, whether a popup or email spam. Someone dumb/illiterate enough not to notice (or mind) the misspelling is far more likely to actually fall for the scam. It's an easy filter, guaranteed to weed out people smart enough to notice.
