If a restaurant has no paper menus and requires you to download their app or look at their mobile site while I'm sitting right there in the place, then I'll just not go there, and eat somewhere else.
These are both great things to do if you value your privacy.Sometimes I like to just not bring my phone with me when I go places. Not an unreasonable thing to do I think.
Various little hints point to those "retailer apps" being data harvesting vectors (if it's not proven already). You have to check in at the store = location privileges. You get to browse online = they track every single tap, every scroll, every item you look at, how long you look at an item, etc. = personalized advertising data. Why would I ever give a retailer access to that? Also, I feel like many apps are user-hostile. Lots of dark patterns that lead you to agree to things you don't want to agree to, e.g. contact and location access. The interfaces are just plain garbage, useful items buried inside of crappy menus as if built by contrarians. Apps suck, and the dumbest part is that many apps boil down to being wrappers for web interfaces. We have web browsers for a reason, yet these companies probably spend 6 figures+ on dumbass apps that are basically fancy browser shortcuts because the average person can't take 15 seconds to open the browser and type a .com address.
There's a classic ad targeting story where Target sent some girl ads/coupons for baby stuff before she even knew she was pregnant. IIRC it got her in trouble with her parents too, because she was underage. If Target's ad science was that "good" 10+ years ago, with just that girl's purchase history and some demographic data, imagine what ad companies/retailers are able to do with your data now that they have thousands more data points.
I don't think I need to explain why leaving your phone at home is a good idea. Just look at any court case involving cell phone location data, whether it's GPS or tower pings or WiFi association or whatever. What else can you expect when you carry around a box full of radios?
Anyway, I could go on for a long time about privacy issues. I'll stop before it becomes a full-blown rant.
