We had a couple of juvie detention centers that were located in the rural areas of the state. The DOC decided that they needed to be shut down because of allegations of abuse and the fact that these centers were away from their "family and support structures." You know, the ones that really helped them develop into the fine yoots the state has to wrangle in the first place.
The idiocy on display is so egregious it kinda hurts my feelings.

The AWB was brought about mainly due to the 'feral youth' of the 1990's.
Movies, TVs, music, the news, all going on about the inner city kids having machineguns. It was all about protecting people from "Super-Predators" as a certain meglomaniac put it.
They can't get that milage out of today because there's no way they'll go back to villainizing the same people and for anyone else, it doesn't work.
That, and people don't trust the government and cops any more and want to keep weapons to protect themselves.
On the taxes:
Between State, Federal, SS, FICA, and everything else, THAT'S What chunks up 20-50% of your paycheck.
That's before sales tax, gas tax, property tax, food tax, and everything else.

She was not wrong. However, she backtracked herself to save her career as America's abuela or whatever. (Granted, I bought it at the time for personal reasons.) I don't think she would've brought back segeration or the like, but could've enacted stricter penalties on "feral youth" as you put it. Overpolicing I suppose you can say. We're past the spectrum of law enforcement since there's a level of distrust coming from both sides mainly for pragmatic reasons.

The fastest, surest way to relieve a lot of the budget issues is to stop giving free shit to illegals and boot their asses out of the country. (Or, if allowed to stay, they can only remain in compost form.) Massive savings in money going on on free welfare to them, massive savings in housing, more jobs for Americans, more taxes coming in from those jobs, savings on the criminal system, and so on.

On the topic of government spending and funding it, here are the figures for this year.
2024 is a record breaking year for retirement so the need to maintain or increase the amount of money going to Social Security and Medicare is something that won't be going away anytime soon.
The future sustainability of all of this is in doubt considering what is going on with the talks around Social Security possibly reducing benefits in the future.

Easiest way to deal with the SS problem without the political suicide of reducing it is to deny SS to people who are not citizens and who cannot show proof they contributed to it.
Refuse to send money to places like California who are paying for illegals to get SS for example.

honestly all that's needed to fix social security would be to raise the taxable payroll limit. it's $168,600 this year. any payroll income above that doesn't get taxed for social security
that tax brought in $1.351 trillion in 2023. so it's not like you wouldn't bring in a shitload of money by keeping the rate (6.2% each from the employee and the employer or 12.4% for the self-employed) the same but raising the limit

Showing the rate doesn't actually show what they've paid though. High income earners tend to shelter money and use mechanisms like securities backed lines of credit to live using tax free money. The effective rate they pay after their accountants are done with it is not even close to 17% or 25%.
