Kayla has expressed her feelings of inadequacy and failure as a mother and a woman.
Also a year before her "I'm a failure at being a woman, a wife, a mother, everything.." quote that aged super well. I wonder if she knew she was going to be a horrible failure even back then.
Kayla felt like a failure at "life" and being a "woman, wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, everything". Her sense of failure ran very deep and spanned her entire identity and extended to every relationship she had even at that moment.
Kayla knew she was already a failure. Kayla just wanted relief and was counting on Nick for that rather than make a serious attempt to improve her situation.
Conversely, Nick thought he was a success. Nick was a winner. Of course he could fix his marriage. All Nick had to do was follow his own advice and his family would be just fine.
