Gambling addiction exists though? I was under the impression that any action that produces a dopamine reaction can become an addiction. In the case of drug addiction yeah there is a major component of a substance dependence but a lot of what keeps people abusing substances are the routines they create surrounding the substance, for Nick I imagine that was originally normalizing overconsumption on his streams.

Have you ever posted the backstory to your falling out with Rekieta? Given how he aired you out in the Dear John stream and how central that's become to the lore about his downfall (isn't it the stream that led his online buddies to talk about the need for an intervention?) I know I'd be really curious to hear a detailed account of how and why you became disillusioned with him.

The best brief definition of addiction I've heard is 'compulsive use despite repeated negative consequences.' If there are no negative consequences, it's just a hobby. If there are negative consequences and you quit, you aren't addicted. It's when it keeps fucking your life up and you can't stop doing it that you know you have a problem.

I always think of the Sean Struggle Session in conjunction with Dear John. I don't think it gets much mention anymore (is it be in the OP?) but I imagine the past few months in the Rekieta household have held a similar atmosphere.
I think these two streams cemented for me that Nick's personality was probably not the result of a disease but that Nick's disease was probably a result of his personality.

Woah… how the mighty can and will fall. I never really rigorously followed Rekieta, but I can’t say I’m surprised to see he turned out to be such a garbage person. I always thought it was pretty obvious, yet to my surprise he had carved out a hell of a YouTube career despite being a nobody.

Personally, I was won over by his Greer readings, which I thought were hilarious (mostly because Greer’s book is a masterpiece in cringe and belongs in the library of congress), but every time I looked into anything else I thought the guy was trying to find a way to sell being a piece of shit. After the Maddox well had gainfully dried up what else was he to do? Apparently try making propaganda videos. I always thought it was obvious he didn’t believe any of the shit he was saying. Just saying what the audience wanted to hear.

I always had this looming question in the back of my head, “what kind of husband with 5 kids and a career as a lawyer gives it all up to become a YouTuber that gets drunk and insults people?” And his insults were never even good. Like… if it wasn’t cuck it was something stupid like calling people short or something. Great work. Did you use the height defense when representing your clients in court? “Your honor, people of the jury. My client cannot be guilty.
