Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I wonder if @PreserveTube has experienced any problems. The website still shows videos being archived as of right now.
Not really. I'm using youtubei.js with the platform set to YTSTUDIO_ANDROID, and it works fine. The only problem is that YouTube randomly bans Mullvad's IP from time to time, so I have to restart it. Other than that, I haven't noticed anything significant.

I don't think I get 2/3 deleted, but it is a bad and annoying system designed to fuck with the users. You can check this while logged in to see if a comment was sent to a black hole or temporary hell:
Also, the uploaders have only a limited ability to control how hard the algorithm scrubs comments. They can't turn it all the way off and will sometimes be blamed by commentards for censorship they didn't do.
I've done the testing with more than one account. Even if the posts show up on the comment history and the comment is visible to you when you check back in the original comment box its still gonna be hidden for everybody else. Its more of a shadowban and they hide way more comments that one might initially think.

Nobody is going to take the necessary steps to combat this (stop paying Google, stop buying Google products, stop watching YouTube, encourage creators to use other platforms), so nothing will change.
You should throw your Chromecast into the Mediterranean.

The ones that do get ostracized so that makes it harder. You are right though.

Yes, a lot of normies are willing to watch a shitton of ads and consume slop from "Content creators".

What will change is that Youtube will not be able to remain free in far future at least. The fact that they go after a minority of adblock users make me believe they are "looking for coins in the couch" because it is extremely expensive to maintain such a massive website. Youtube doesn't stop people from uploading garbage, and that garbage multiplied over the years and occupies now a lot of bandwidth and storage. Also a lot more 4K videos.

I am prepared for the worst case when downloading videos isn't possible anymore. I have already archived obscure music. One thing I am looking for now is how to get one single 1080p frame without downloading full videos. I need to get the cover art since I only downloaded the audio

commenting is a crapshoot, like 2 out of 3 times i comment anything it gets instantly deleted, respectful, mild, uncontroversial or not, doesn't even matter. You'd have to tongue nigger and tranny anus or else it goes. The Terminator irl is a tranny janny algorithm.

This drives me mad far more than the ads if I'm being honest. You can usually work around ads, there's only so much you can do to work around a draconian censorship algorithm that damn near expects you to fellate trannies and niggers with every breath. I have a ton of burners, so I've done a lot of testing too. It's baffling how many comments actually end up in the void or thrown exclusively to the "new" section and kept hidden there. "You're stinky and a dumb dumb" may pass, but "You smell like garbage and you're a dumbass" is getting thrown to the void just to give a minor example of how ridiculous it is. There's been plenty of times I've just outright given up on commenting because I've reworded it 2-3 times and it's still getting sent to the shadow realm.

Untested but there is a range option with yt-dlp. Might have to feed it into ffmpeg.
I know this is how livestreams are handled and possibly how to get the beginning of a livestream.
Could try to get one second or less of a video.

Also fancier would be browser automation and grabbing a screenshot, either using the browser screenshot ability or system. Heavier resource usage but far harder to block since it’s just a browser.

Gentlemen.

It's 2024 and we are experiencing late stage YouTube. The economical situation of the United States and the world at large is forcing the largest companies to make sudden and drastic decisions to try and keep their income higher than their operating expenses, whereas in the past it seemed even the largest companies were happy to operate at a loss or with no profit for years. YouTube in particular had been terminally unprofitable for years, and it seems that pajeet CEOs are calling it: make some fucking money.

YouTube is experimenting with a Final Solution to the Adblocker problem, similar to Twitch, where they inject ads directly into the bitstreams that make up a video, so that an ad is technologically indistinguishable from the content you've requested.

I believe, therefore, that I should remind people that the only thing they truly have is whatever they personally own. In this context, I am referring to downloading copies of videos. I wrote a guide to this here:

For many of you, YouTube will be a place where you've saved videos for over a decade. It's time to save what you want off the platform before they start doing more dumb shit. Whatever you want to keep forever on YouTube should be downloaded as soon as possible.

Are there any lolcow channels I should be archiving?

I could at least understand doing that with livestreams the way Twitch does it, but if they want to implement it in prerecorded videos too, then that's just fucking asinine.

If the ads are placed in the m3u8 playlists along with other segments, would they get included in the final merged yt-dlp files unless you pay their very Jewish toll and use cookies with the script?

One of the more fascinating tricks I've seen is that Youtube will actually do fake Likes on your comment and send you notifs about it, even if your comment has been sent to invisibility hell and no real human could have seen it.

As for the linked yt-DLP issues - it looks like Google is blocking downloads and banning accounts for people who get a LOT of videos, so those who do occasional archiving should be fine. Not sure whether the ad injection has a workaround though
