Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
commenting is a crapshoot, like 2 out of 3 times i comment anything it gets instantly deleted, respectful, mild, uncontroversial or not, doesn't even matter. You'd have to tongue nigger and tranny anus or else it goes. The Terminator irl is a tranny janny algorithm.
I posted a comment about twerking and it didn’t show. Meanwhile, there are videos showing twerking which are still up.

Youtube likes to try and break these sites from time to time, but when they work they're almost as fast (sometimes faster) than Youtube itself, there's sometimes buffering issues but generally the user experience on these alternative youtube sites are pretty decent.
I'd rather wait a little bit longer for a video to buffer than have that video be interrupted by FORCED ads.
I installed Invidious when I first switched away from YouTube's official site. Worked well enough but upgrading was fucky and playback became unreliable later on. FreeTube has been reliable so far and it isn't a server so it's more resource friendly. NewPipe on Android has also been good so far. I haven't seen ads on either.

Now that Invidious servers are getting blocked I wonder if YouTube.js wouldn't be a possibility for a Kiwi Farms proxy. It's what FreeTube uses. I don't do JavaScript so I have no idea if it could be easily implemented to replace YouTube embeds.

Could give it the Adnauseum treatment. If it was possible to do this through some sort of automated exploit or plugin and done en masse by many people, it could screw with them a bit. But it won't be enough to make Youtube NOT do this shit.
I'm not expecting anyone to combat ads on YouTube's official apps. If you use official apps you suck dick for cock. I'm referring only to videos downloaded for archiving purposes. As long as YouTube gets to rape official app user normies I don't think they'll bother injecting adds into downloads. That's what I hope anyway.

Also, speaking of downloaded videos, from what I've heard (can't confirm this) downloaded videos with injected ads possibly gets cut off by the duration of the ad. So basically you miss out on like 1 or 2 minutes of the end of the video or something because the ad will have added on to the run time without youtube saying so.
Where are you hearing that? Are you saying this has already happened or is it just speculation?

If injected ads cause downloaded videos to be truncated that's obviously going to affect archiving and there's going to be a shitshow. If it isn't already happening I'm skeptical that it will though. I don't know exactly how yt-dlp works but I don't think it downloads according to length. It seems to estimate length for display purposes but downloads data until there's no more data to download, so it might not make a difference.

Has anybody else gotten to the point that they're just tired of YouTube for reasons other than the ad shit? The terrible search and recommendations are one thing, but so much of the content is just insipid garbage. Nowadays I only use it for music (since RVX Music seems to have whethered things well and uBlock Origin has held firm on YouTube Music) and to look up clips from old shows or any TV shows or movies that have been uploaded on full; MyRetroTVs has been pretty good for the latter. Transvribe has proven invaluable for getting a quick answer from these videos that have a seemingly good question in the title, but bloated run time.

After thinking about it for a couple of days is there anyone else who is actually excited for the change to hit them? If I start getting bombarded with ads I'd probably just follow music labels/artists I like off of Youtube and I'd have zero temptation to go in and check Youtube because of the ads. Free at last!

I hope adblocks don't fix this, and that 25% who aren't niggercattle and use adblock just do something else with their time. I don't care if there's no competing platform I just want to see Youtube burn completely.

Recent update on YouTube has caused errors on Invidious instances and yt-dlp as well with the same error message that says "This helps protect our community. Learn more". This is because the AI sometimes "detects" you as BOT and force you to login your Google account if you watch it on YouTube.
You can also check yt-dlp and Invidious Github Issues page to check the situations.

Well fuck.

Just tested and yt-dlp is still working for me:

This is a very good summary of the issue and whether adblockers can handle it. I recommend watching.
Skip to 6:00 for the "Sign in to confirm you're not a bot" update.

I wonder if @PreserveTube has experienced any problems. The website still shows videos being archived as of right now.

To even find any good content I had to install an extension that lets me block channels from appearing and I then had to spend an hour and a half blocking every single news channel in existence.

I am currently archiving some obscure music channels and some niche channels . Just to be safe in the worst case.
I think the ad shoving is possible to be defeated but it needs time.

I think YT does this because they are low on profits and they try to squeeze money from the minority of ad-blocker users. I think in future the days of free YT will be gone.

Care to tell me the name of that extension? Is it able to block certain phrases used in video titles, too? My recommendations have been in the shitter since forever and last week the TV app (which i mostly use for watching YT) shit the bed so hard that every single channel i had blocked or video that i tagged as not interested in did reappear and it's driving me insane.

I don't think I get 2/3 deleted, but it is a bad and annoying system designed to fuck with the users. You can check this while logged in to see if a comment was sent to a black hole or temporary hell:
Also, the uploaders have only a limited ability to control how hard the algorithm scrubs comments. They can't turn it all the way off and will sometimes be blamed by commentards for censorship they didn't do.

It's just speculation I've been reading elsewhere. Take it with a heaping of salt. If it is a thing that comes down the line then yea it'll be a bitch for archiving. At that point you may as well record your screen and cut out the ads in an editor which sounds like a fucking pain in the bollocks tbh.

I've heard good stuff about Freetube. I'll give that a try!
