Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I haven't got ads yet but when inevitably the injected ads roll out en masse, and all current forms of ad block stop working, wouldn't a service like this work?

- have a small number of servers hosted in different parts of the world
- download the video on each server and compare the different streams
- where they start to differ, this must be an ad, so skip that part of it

It may get a bit tricky if the ads are offset at different times but it should still be doable. I think this will be a time consuming and expensive enterprise but that's the only way I see around it.

Boomers and aging gen x retards raised on non-stop commercials and their pet pajeets are determined to ruin the Internet, and normies, zoomers and gen a are too dumb to protest, yet again. For what it's worth, I have found one extension (recommended on this site, I'm pretty sure) that will successfully block Twitch ads: Stream Cleaner. It only works in Chromium based browsers, and who knows how long it will last. I'm surprised Chrome hasn't removed it from their store already. The saddest part is all these good ad blockers are based on a few, or sometimes, just a lone dedicated autist who will maintain it in the face of a changing and worsening Internet. So perhaps someone will create something to block Youtubes shit, or the already established extensions will find a way to get around it. Pretty :optimistic: I know.

Until then, I'll just have to buy yet another hard drive and start archiving all those art channels I like. Jdownloader 2 will archive a whole channel, but it takes a while to collect the links.

It isn't an ad blocker, it just spams fake clicks on ads. You still see the ads, but it creates a massive headache for the website owner and makes it impossible to gather useful data on that user.
Nigger it's literally an overlay for ublock origin, it even has the same UI. It visually removes ads AND generates fraudulent clicks. It does fuck up every now and then, but if that's the price for fucking over ad peddlers, then I'm more than willing to accept it.

That sounds hard to design and not profitable in the slightest for the amount of servers etc. you would have to pay for.

I have never used an adblock.
I skip ads by playing the video in picture-in-picture mode and then skipping to the last second. YouTube thinks I watched the ad, even though I only saw two frames of the ad. YouTube won't complain about me breaking the TOS with adblocks, I save money on YouTube Premium and I continue to watch YouTube without being bothered by anyone. Skipping ads manually with a function that comes with the browser does not count as ad-blocking, so they can't do anything about it. Everybody wins!

so that an ad is technologically indistinguishable from the content you've requested.
We'll find a way, we always do.

Brave still blocks ads, how long until it doesnt?
Its not that great, I've ublock too because the brave shields don't catch everything.
One of the more fascinating tricks I've seen is that Youtube will actually do fake Likes on your comment and send you notifs about it, even if your comment has been sent to invisibility hell and no real human could have seen it.
Got more info on that?
They would have ads for cleaning services that would use images from porn videos.
Nobody QCs the ads and the report system is clunky enough that most people don't even bother.
I guess most folks working at YouTube are too young, too retarded or most probably too Indian to remember the lessons learned from the Ad War's arms race from late web 1.0 / early web 2.0's days. Good luck fighting that battle again, Rasheed.
Nah the average googler is 40something, they know, but they also know the average user's technical knowledge took a nosedive after the iphone and most yt views come from devices and not PC now, so they believe it will work this time.

And really all they have to do is make ad blocking painful enough for the average normie to eat shit and watch the ads, and normies already can't be arsed to install revanced.
I'm surprised Chrome hasn't removed it from their store already.
Because it fucks over amazon, not them.

Thank you for the heads up, KF. What's really stupid is this is current year and this is probably one of the best websites to stay updated and informed. It's not a diss to KF, so much as it is to highlight just how bad things really are in current year

It's not ideally how we want to be informed, but goddamn, we'll take it. Thanks again!

EDIT: I'm not thrilled that I feel like I have to edit this post to clarify that the aforementioned 'we' represents the collective site, and not me, an individual. Youtube is also somewhat to blame, though!

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOUTUBE. HATE. HATE!

Ahhh, I come back from my gig and what do I see? YouTube becoming an accelerationist (which they already were but eh). But except for nuking the world they're nuking their platform.

The current generation of normies is mindboggling, so it may just actually work. All corpos will test the line to see how much the current generation with take. If something doesn't stick, they'll try again and again until it does. If this doesn't land gracefully this generation it might do next generation, maybe on a new platform. Even worse is that there will be unpaid defenders of these antics. (And thanks janny for merging my posts, forgot to do it myself)

3: The audiences are tiny as a result of 1, and 2, and intertia. You can go on an alt platform, and doom yourself to a thousandth of the YT audience.
This depends on who you are, what you're doing, and how you're earning money. "The algorithm" seems to be pure assrape that demands you commit to a youtube "career". The "community" is equally pozzed: "No new videos? meh I'm unsubscribing".

YouTube helped when I was repairing my laptop (the fan died). But just today, I watched a "how the sausage is made" video (in the troon surgery thread), and there were massive ads for other videos completely covering the screen for the last 30 or so seconds. I have them blocked on PC. But imagine it broke and I were watching a "how to fix your PC" video on the phone. "WE SEE YOU'RE ENJOYING THE VIDEO, WE THINK YOU WILL ENJOY THIS OTHER VIDEO ON FIXING A DIFFERENT MODEL."

I have a modified version of the youtube app with adblocker integrated installed on my iOS devices via AltStore, but very recently, for the first time since I started using it a few years ago, I notice some ads are starting to get through. It's very frustrating because I don't know of a better alternative for bypassing youtube ads on iOS atm.

I have premium, so this probably won't have any impact on me, but the premise itself disgusts me. You are literally changing the content at that point, I'm guessing they can't be sued over it because of the TOS or whatever, but to me this seems to be lawsuit worthy, especially for content created before this was implemented.

"WE SEE YOU'RE ENJOYING THE VIDEO, WE THINK YOU WILL ENJOY THIS OTHER VIDEO ON FIXING A DIFFERENT MODEL."
I literally had this in looking for teardowns of new laptops. "You want this related model from ten years ago right?"

(in the end I ordered a Framework 13, and I'm preparing for disappointment.)

Gentlemen.

It's 2024 and we are experiencing late stage YouTube. The economical situation of the United States and the world at large is forcing the largest companies to make sudden and drastic decisions to try and keep their income higher than their operating expenses, whereas in the past it seemed even the largest companies were happy to operate at a loss or with no profit for years. YouTube in particular had been terminally unprofitable for years, and it seems that pajeet CEOs are calling it: make some fucking money.

YouTube is experimenting with a Final Solution to the Adblocker problem, similar to Twitch, where they inject ads directly into the bitstreams that make up a video, so that an ad is technologically indistinguishable from the content you've requested.

I believe, therefore, that I should remind people that the only thing they truly have is whatever they personally own. In this context, I am referring to downloading copies of videos. I wrote a guide to this here:

For many of you, YouTube will be a place where you've saved videos for over a decade. It's time to save what you want off the platform before they start doing more dumb shit. Whatever you want to keep forever on YouTube should be downloaded as soon as possible.

Are there any lolcow channels I should be archiving?
They should just fire some fucking people to provide better pay, but that would remove their diversity game with everyone that isn't white.

If I didn't know better I'd say g00gle was running a grand experiment testing the power of the audience inertia that has been the bedrock of Big Tech dominance. No matter what you do to annoy them people never leave because you're the only game in town. You're the only game in town because people never leave. The only thing left for Sundar to do is put on a MAGA hat and become based like Elon.
