171,300 patients traveled out of state for abortions in 2023 - Of course those who can’t pay should just use a wire hanger am I right bros?

More than 170,000 people have traveled out of state to receive abortion care since January of last year, according to new data from the Guttmacher Institute, a figure underlined by the increasing difficulty to access care in some states.

Out-of-state care accounted for more than 15 percent of the estimated 1 million clinician-provided abortion procedures between 2023 and March of this year, according to the data. That figure has more than doubled since 2020.

“Traveling for abortion care requires individuals to overcome huge financial and logistical barriers, and our findings show just how far people will travel to obtain the care they want and deserve,” Guttmacher data scientist Isaac Maddow-Zimet said in a statement.

“Despite the amazing resiliency of abortion patients and providers, we can’t lose sight of the fact that this is neither normal nor acceptable,” he continued. “A person should not have to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to receive basic health care.”

Fourteen states have near-complete bans on abortion, a rapid change sparked by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision in 2022, which overturned a prior federal standard mandating access to abortion procedures.

States that border those with recent near-total bans, such as Kansas and New Mexico, saw a majority of abortions in their state be from out-of-state patients. Texas’s abortion ban is one of the most restrictive in the country.

Florida has also served as a state with relatively easy access to abortion care when compared to its neighbors until earlier this year. The state implemented a strict six-week abortion ban in May.

“The state of residence data makes it clear that this policy change will be devastating not only for Floridians, but also for the thousands of others who would have traveled there after being denied care in their home states,” Guttmacher Vice President Kelly Baden said of Florida’s ban. “Once again, we see that a state’s abortion policies affect thousands of people beyond that state’s borders.”
The new bans could also have political ramifications. Florida is among the states with an abortion rights measure on the ballot this November, and Democrats have hoped to use the referendums to increase turnout.

Two-thirds of the approximately 1 million abortions were via medication, the institute also found. That method was under threat via a federal lawsuit until last week, when the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government does have the authority to limit restrictions on certain abortion medication.

That is terrible. I feel bad for these women. I hope the US changes its mind, how can a 1st world country have such a backwards view?
because activist groups use abortion as a way to keep funneling money into their organizations and political groups use abortion as a way to divide americans

the polling is always pretty clear -- the vast majority of americans think that abortion should be allowed for any reason up to the first trimester. after the first trimester it should only be because of the health of the mother or if the baby has a serious health issue. most people in america already want the system that most european countries have, an elective abortion ban after 12-15 weeks, but a small number of people want to ban abortion outright and a small number of people want to sacrifice babies on an altar to satan. attaching your NGO or political party to crazy people gets more views than being reasonable

Oh we're doing this shit again huh?

Unfortunately that small number of people control the governments of like half US states currently, so you get shit like middle schoolers who were raped being forced to give birth and women being forced to gestate and birth literally brainless babies and all kinds of other horrific shit like that.

Rape is something like a fraction of a single percentage point of abortions. Broken down using the statistics we have available to us, something like 100,000 of those cases don't feel they can afford another kid, 50,000 feel being a parent is detrimental to their mental health, 20 thousand don't know who the father is or don't want a kid to trap them in a relationship, a thousand are medical emergencies, and maybe that last 300 are tragic cases of sexual abuse.

Most of the dramatic back and forth about abortion online comes from people trying to conflate the grey area that most pro-life people even recognize as the norm for all abortion cases. The reason people vote to outlaw abortion isn't because 300 women across the US got raped and the sad reality of life is that sometimes an ethically complex decision must be made. Even the very religious people I know will leave that up to choice and prayer, even if they personally seek all other avenues first.

People do it because for those 300 women there's like 169,000 that are killing their kid because it would be undesired financial or mental hardship (like every kid ever) and that justification doesn't cut it, ethically, for a majority of people in a lot of states. The same way, albeit to a less extreme effect, that decriminalizing theft in California might keep a handful of street urchins from getting locked up for stealing produce, but the majority of people actually taking advantage of the legal situation aren't victims of circumstance in dire need of the law's charity: they're just stealing because the law now affords them the luxury of not needing to possess the self control or foresight to not steal by validating theft as an option.

Tl;Dr if the only people getting abortions were the people everyone likes to PRETEND are the only ones, it'd be a bipartisan nonissue.

China allows abortion up to 12 weeks
Europe allows abortions up to 12 weeks
United States allow abortions up to 24 weeks

A baby isn't a punishment you selfish fuck. If you can't handle the consequences of playing adult games then don't play them. Simple as.
Actually, it’s before 14 weeks in 2 provinces and more unrestricted in most provinces. We don’t outright ban it in provinces or force people to travel to another part of the country to get it done.

Call me selfish, I don’t care. It’s more selfish to force people to have a family when they can’t. Adults have sex, it’s a part of life. It’s none of my concern who has sex or why. Mistakes happen, but as it stands it is literally a punishment for women and in one of my previous posts on this thread I gave the reasonings.
Even with the current brouhaha, abortion laws in the US are the least restrictive in the world.
Wrong. China is much more lax.

It's also not fair to the potential kid since I highly doubt a kid that only exists because it's mom couldn't get an abortion isn't going to be resented and abused. But it's not like prolifers give a shit about the kid once it's born.

Prolifers also largely don't give a shit about IVF even though it kills way more embryos than abortion does. Some prolifers even use IVF themselves.

There's a reason IVF remains legal in abortion ban states.

Basically unless you are a man willing to take a rape baby to term then fuck you.
If males could get pregnant you know damn well abortion would be easily accessible everywhere. There would probably be vending machines for abortion pills in every public restroom. And children who were raped sure as fuck wouldn't be forced to give birth.

You're seriously simping for a gov that has more restrictive laws on abortion and has been on record forcing abortions on groups they oppress.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH holy shit. I guess it wasn't your concern when they were forcing birth control and abortions on Uighur Muslims either.

Fucking bug men. They are disgusting.

I mean people say this but we already know with circumcision that men have less bodily agency than women do in the US despite apparently running it as a political monolith for their own greatest convenience. If anything what would really happen is that men would be even more ostracized for "slipping up" and getting pregnant in the first place. And probably considered weak as men for letting themselves get pregnant.

Some people want exceptions for rape. But you want exceptions for everything.
Yes. I don’t care if a woman chooses to not carry a baby because it means she can’t have lattes. She should be able to.

what part of a woman doesn’t want babies makes you think she isn’t ready for babies?

I really appreciate you two doing the yeoman's work in advocating we repeal the 19th ammendment.

Also, @Android raptor, wouldn't it make more sense for you to be named gynoid raptor? The Android part sounds kind of moided if you ask me.

Call me selfish, I don’t care. It’s more selfish to force people to have a family when they can’t.
More selfish than murdering your own baby?

Also, how? Selfishness describes a self interested mode of being. In this scenario, I'm telling you it's evil to throw your unborn child into a medical-grade wood chipper; and that society shouldn't tolerate you doing so, nor should it tolerate doctors profiting off your desperation. Tha doesn't seem selfish exactly; maybe thoughtless or uncaring (from where you stand), but not selfish.

I'm not a fan of circumcision but it's way less likely to kill you than pregnancy

It also doesn't result in a kid being born destined for mistreatment and abuse, or trap people in poverty.

Basically unless you are a man willing to take a rape baby to term then fuck you.

Unless you have kids yourself then you don't get a say on letting faggots near kids

Same logic.

Ask them if a guy can have a finicial abortion where they surrender all rights to a child the mother wants to keep in order to not have to pay child support. Suddenly every pro baby killing will start parroting anti-abortion talking points about how the guy should not have had sex and needs to accept responsibility.

They don't care about "muh rights to kill my baby" they just don't want to be held responsible for their actions.
