I recall on one episode of The Dick Show where Dick blithely discussed a moneymaking scheme he hatched in the early 2000s which involved digital rips of one of the Star Wars prequels. From my fuzzy recollection, he explained the scheme involved having participants complete a survey and then somehow send money at the very end. He would then exchange an intentionally unplayable file, so the participants were out of their money. Dick's sole rationalization was that no copyright infringement technically took place, but seeing that Lucasfilms didn't exactly appreciate the prospect of someone online potentially stealing from them, their legal team quickly sent out a cease and desist notice. Dick claimed to have netted at least six figures.

Taking him at his word, I could only imagine how he'd run an ambitious project like NewProject2 or any of his other schemes.

Despite my hatred for him now, I do stand by my belief that the first 200 episodes were entertaining. I did relisten to old episodes/call-ins a few months ago and I think they held up. Admittedly, my tastes were a lot different 5 years ago but there was something unique about how he would do his show. There was sort of a mix of everything over a three hour period: he'd cover topics he saw, he'd take some call ins, he'd play fan made songs, he'd read fan mail and would play voicemails. It was like a variety show and he would be the host and, to his credit, I felt he ran it very well and I did genuinely find him funny and entertaining. A lot of people did. I'm sure in retrospect it's easy to look back and say "signs were always there" for the likes of Dick or Rekieta but he made an entertaining show, had a charismatic personality, knew how to network with really interesting figures and had a genuinely principled stand for issues like free speech.
I can't say it's for everyone, and especially if you hate Dax now and know of what he got up to behind the scenes, it'll probably be hard to listen to and enjoy. Maybe it was, in certain ways, a product of its time. Felt like in the 2010s, there was an aggressive push to demonise masculinity, and complain about toxic masculinity and promote feminism, and the by-products of that included events like GamerGate and the Skeptic movement. But TDS managed to be in a perfect window when the Skeptic movement had sort of declined post-election and before masculinity had become corrupted by the Andrew Tate type figures. It was unabashedly masculine but irreverent and not politically motivated. It was Dick and Sean talking about women not knowing the dates of wars. That kind of persona was engaging. Plus occasionally they could have interesting debates and discussions. One of my favourite episodes was 199, when Hot Wheels called in (this was at the height of COVID) and they discussed his situation and debated about lockdowns and the role of the government in making decisions on behalf of its people, which escalated into a discussion about FDR during World War II (Josh also hopped on during this part).
I would push back that it's appeal entirely lied in the Hot Goss with Maddox because I only properly started listening in mid 2019, a year after the LOLsuit, and I still found it interesting. But there's no doubt that was the biggest draw and often made for the best content. Certainly his narrative is a very entertaining story.
That's my view as a jilted fan, but I can see why a lot of people disagree. I'm going to push back on your comment about "shady banks" for NP2 because that is and always was bullshit spun up by PPP.

This is true actually, I think a lot of the appeal for me was how fan oriented it was, and the fan content carried a lot of the show imo. There were a lot of talented (and not so talented) people making goofy fan songs. Segments like the Facebook News were some of the funniest bits, and Dick seemed very appreciative of it all. The content seemed to fizzle out when he started showing contempt for fans who questioned why he was taking shots at Asterios (I was one of those fans), or stepped out of line like @Had did. The cuties shit was the last straw.

Actually I have been seeing a lot of Dick and Vito fanart lately. It mostly involves Eric July though.
